Christian, Ferrell, Bennett and Bourgeois take Costa Mesa finale By Ken Kellogg COSTA MESA, CA, SEPT. 19 Tonight was the end of a spectacular season at Costa Mesa, a season filled with new heroes, old heroes. new rumors, some not so I RIDE AWARE TERRrCABLE The Teflon Super Smooth Cable -Complete line for racing bikes -Requires no oiling -Smoothest pulling cable *Flexible throttle wire gives long life -Heavy duty housing. resists stretch and abuse Write for Free literature Terrycable PO Box 1321. For these, there'll be no speedway till next year. For a special 16, there is one more night - October II, the Nationals. and a new National champ will be crowned and have some big shoes to fill. Since it was the last night, everyone was going to end the season with an all-out effort. No one told me to wear a helmet, yet the infield was ~ more dangerous place to be than usual with Second and Third Division trying so hard to win the last one. Some First Division riders even got a little crazy and made a surprise visit to the infield. The house was full and up for the occasIon. Event number seven was a Handicap semi. Keith Chrisco went down hard. with some help. and the race was restarted. Alan Christian coming from the 60'yard line had his work cut out with names like Steve Columbo. Shawn McConnell. Jeff Tomlin and Chrisco in front of him. As usual, Alan rose to the challenge. On the last lap, Christian passed Chrisco to take the lead and coast for the win. Keith had worked his way into first only to be beaten on the last lap. The match race pitted Mike CurOlO against "Bad" Brad Oxley. Oxley drew lane one and Curoso took the lane right next to Brad inltead of all the way outside. The gate went up and Oxley was first into turn one. CUl'OlO took to the outside and pulled even with Brad in the straightaway. At the end of the first lap. Mike was about one bike length in front but still on the outside. Oxley had the inside advantage on the second and final lap. In the last tum, Curoso had lhe slight lead and cut Oxley shon. Brad lried to go underneath, bUI there wasn't enough and at the wire it was Mike by less than a bike length. The Third Division Main, always full of surprises, had one for the last night as Pam Bennett won, just bealing out-Kerry Miller. Kerry gained about one length every lap and nearly caught her. bUI there weren't enough laps. The Second Division Main began well with Pat Hawley and Paul Belisle colliding with the wall. Pat faired much better on the restart. Robin Bourgeois took the win with Tom Hughes second. Third with a nice ride was Pal Hawley (still missing the lOp to his leathers) followed by beautiful Bobbi Hunter and brother Shane Hawley. The Handicap Main saw John Foster jump OUI fronl with Jan Ballard and Dave Miller right behind followed by Keith Chrisco and the amazing Alan Christian. Ballard went down leaving Foster out front. If Foster won this one, he would be the first rider to win a Main event in all three divisions in one season. John had one slight problem with his Cinderella story - Christian. Alan worked his way past Steve Columbo and was now in third. On the third lap~ Christian passed Miller and moved into second. Then on the lasl lap in tum [Wo, Alan made it happen. He just went under FOiter and moved into first to take the win, followed by FOIter, Miller and Columbo. The Scratch Main matched Dubb Ferrell, Christian, Shawn McConnell and Dave DeTemple. Alan had dreams of another sweep and it looked pretty good. 1bis Wall his race, a Scratch Main at Costa Mesa. But the other three riders had other ideas. The gate went up with both McConnell and DeTemple taking the tum t<>gether. DeTemple spun out and was out of the race. This put Ferrell and Christian second and third. On the third lap, Ferrell passed McConnell on the outside and . Christian passed him on the inside. Dubb gave it his all. riding his bike like a jockey and doing everything but whipping it. Ferrell was not about to do like 50 many do - let Christian inside on the last lap. Christian was closer to Ferrell than Dubb's own rear- tire. For an instant on the finalltraightaway. Christian almost took the lead. But Dubb said no. not this time. At the wire. it was Ferrell, with a ride so hard he rode almost another lap like it was still a race. October II is the big one, the National Championship. the biggest race in speedway in the United States. Promoter Harry Oxley asked to thank all the fans who attended this season. all the officials. the track help, Bruce Flanders, and his wife Marilyn. • Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Dubb F......I: 2.
