Steve Bast took second overall in the standings while Mike Bast won a run-off for third. Gary Nixon stunned a lot of Europeans at Mallory Park's "Race of the Year." Riding a 750cc Triumph Trident triple on a shon course that favored the lighter Yamaha 350cc two-strolte twins, Nixon finished fouTth behind John Cooper, Phil Ileed and Paul Smart. YVOD DuHamel finished lOth. Team Sweden had the consistency required to win the Motocross des Nations held in Italy. The team was paced by Ake JO_D, who won the first moto. Belgium fmished second and Czechoslovakia, whose Jiri SlOdulb was the top individual performer of the day and won the second moto, finished third. A two-year-old coun case finally won motorcyclists the right to ride on the Atlantic City Expressway in New Jersey. In ruling on the case of Roland Ernst, who had been arrested in 1968 for riding a motorcycle on the expressway, the judge found that the ruly banning motorcycles on the expressway was arbilrary. capricious and unreasonable ... " A rash of brush fires in the southern California area 10 years ago threatened Indian DuDell, Saddlebaclt, Bay Mare and Carlsbad motorcycle parks, but only Bay Mare had any fire damage, and that was not on the lrack itself.
