II- NOI1hem California-Northern NeVlldlH)regon-Washington-~Utah-Aiask front of things, winning well in the 250cc Junior class on his KX250 over Mike Bird on the CR250R. Dave Caballero looked good in his new WFO Cycle-sponsored leathers getting third, but wrapping up the overall class high point trophy. Two heat races and a semi put Mark Key on the front side of the 250cc Expert main on the first lap riding the McCill Cycle YZ just in front of Doug Chandler. On the third lap as Chandler came up behind on his very fast and smooth running KX250, he set up early for an inside shot putting a lot of pressure on the left foot and steel shoe when he encountered a large hole that sent the leg off kilter breaki ng it just a bove the ankle. He rode off the track without falling and went for X-rays that confirmed a clean but severe break that would require about six week~ of healing. It also blew his chances of becoming the youngest rider to ever win a number one Black Plate. Key had little trouble winning the race after that incident with Dave Boyles taking a fine second over Gary Johnson and Craig Scroggins. John Lanoni brought his Honda down from NorCal to win 500cc Novice over Mick Schrank. Marvin Lewis easily adapted from the Novice to the Junior class with a win over Steve Nunes and Doug Mignano. The 500cc Expert main seemed to take forever to run at past the midnight hour when one spectator de' cided to vent his fury on the track's promoter and little could be done by the officials to stop him. A very tough starter had the boys unhappy, but he stuck by his guns and got the scene shaped pretty well. Once the green flew, it was Craig Scroggins in the lead over Ted Davidson and Mark Key with Danny Bennett from Orange holding off the rest of the troops. Teddy waited a few la ps before putting on the pressure, riding the KR-framed TT500 monoshoek in, under and around ~croggins on the Glaze Electric/Bill Campbell-tuned XR500 out of Dave Bird's Honda shop in Sonora. Once by, Ted was gone with Scroggins taking second over the McGill Yamaha and Bennet celebrating his 15th birthday with a fine fourth on the NDsparked XR500. Results 100 EX: 1. After six years of putting on the best poker run in the Uni- ted Stares, the Tacoma Trail Cruisers were pinned to the mat. Last year, no run.' The Washington State Attorney General's office said that it was illegal, that it was a game of chance_ Hear that Las Vegas? Watch out, you may be next. Anyway, this year the run was back on top_ Healthy as before? In this writer's opinion, not by any means. Almost 1:!l00 riders came out to ride this year's Hawaiian Smuggler and throw darts to be able to have a winner who could show some skill via his or her reward. I personally find this offensive and wrong, dead wrong. Why should it be illegal to go by the luck of the draw? Anyone can win little kids, big kids, men, women. You name it, the draw is pure chance and that, my friends, is what a poker run is. Pure chance. Why not? Capitol forest, where the Smuggler is run, has a series of some of the best trail riding I have ever ridden. Well marked, something-foreveryone-type terrain. To be able to even touch your knobbies to the terra firma is a pJeasure_ The forestry department, the club, private citizens and all who have hacked the many, many miles of trails could hardly have done better. As I said, last year there was no run. No games of chance said the D.A. The year before, the run was almost cancelled the night before because of some disgrunded borne owner who complained of noise. They lived so far away, they couldn't have heard any sound anyway. The technicality was, you can't run on county roads without street-legal machines. The club is something else. They built a bridge over a creek during the night and ran the course alongside the road leaving base camp so as to Uep the run alive and not make the citiz=s, all 1600 of them, have to load up and pull borne. This year, to be legal, the club made the Smuggler a dan run and therefore a game of skill. Ins~ad of punching your card and the luck of the draw, you SlOpped.. got off your machine, threw one dart at a boa-rd of playing cards and whatever you hit, that was it. Skill, man, skill. It dido't help the link kids and it sure added to the time/line situation-. But that's my point. What is wrong with a purely ludy game of chance? It gives, everyone a fair chance and all ages can win and yet it allows all to go out and ride and have fun from a purely equal level. Richard Swanson won the trip to Hawaii for two plus cash with a queenhigh Straight flush_ Amon Schau rode the hot shoe course to first place with four aces, king high and won a Yamaha %50. Don McCormick won a Yamaha 100 with four aces, 10 high, Jim Frazier, Steve Ferry, Carl Barnes, Chris Totlin and Rick Fike all had four aces with queen high on down to a :!l high. The club gave out what seemed like a hundred trophies and much, much cash, A great idea was had by a member wbo shall remain namdess. Give out cash by allowing the winner to slick his or beT hand into a gold barrel. But, have the opening just a tad smalle:r than the fISt you have when you've got all that money wadded up in your hot litde hap9-. Needless to say, the anall fry did wdl. This was my fourth year riding the event, but it: will DOl be my last, even if we have to throw dans again next year. The trails are wonh every hit of the preparation it: takes to ride an event of such quality. • I.cathct.l dotit have to feel and fit like ilOn to weal like it. ~xpcrimcc ~SPRIT ; II ~ t 0 00 Cj) l- V ~ 0 -.J U 0 • Carland Suzuki - Largest Parts Inventory in Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex Overnight delivery via bus available in most parts of Texas, Oklahoma, & Louisiana 300 Lavon - Hwy 78N 2l4-494-3374 Garland, Texas75040 213 924 21'1 ...
