Northern C8lifornia-Northern Ne' Beebe wins bike at Argyll Labor Day extravaganza By Mel White DIXON, CA, AUG. 30-SEPT. 1 The Labor Day celebration at Argyll Park was much more than a mere MX event and a larger than usual crowd was on hand to enjoy it throughout. Saturday evening featured chef Bruce Langley etal doing BBQ wizardry with Campbell lamb and Harrison hamburger. On Sunday night there was dancing until I a.m. to the live country/rock sounds .of "Rough Road." The only sour note of the weekend was that the music attracted more than the mellow motocrossing crowd and one motorcycle disappeared from the campsite of this wtlter. Help in recovering the stolen RM I 25N would remove the only sbadow from this otherwise perfect .event. Buel Campbell offered a prize 'RMI25T to th.. tOP Novice or Junior tid..r which heightened the competition 'n the Sponsman motos considerably. Intense emotions w..nt unrelieved until th.. posting of the third and final moto scores on Monday morning. Ronny ,Beebt" bt"came the undisputed winner by virtu.. of his I -1-1 sweep of the 250cc ovices. Back on a motorcycl.. only sinct" this Jun.. aft..r a four year hiatus from eompetition. 2 I -y..ar-old Beebe cam.. up from what is definitely called a crummy start thr.... times to cross th.. finish lin<' in from of all of his competilion. Tht" oVl'rall winn..rs of all th.. other Novic.' divisions w..re runn..rs-up for th.· prizl'. as wl'lI as Chris Ladd in the 125cc Juniors. but all of th..m cam.. in second in one of tht"ir three motos. Only Myk Brown in the 125 Novice Division I cou Id ha ye actua lIy tied Bt·.. bt" in points had h.. scort"d a clear st't of firsts. The other divisions were shy on.. rid..r ..ach to garner equal p()ints for an equal finish. F....lings ran high on that issut" , but Beebe's flawless riding made it thankfully moot. In Brown's rae.., Mark McCarty (Hon) had the holeshot in th.. first moto (ollowt'd by Bill Willig (Hon), Tim Collins (Yam) and Brown (Kaw). Willig took ov..r tht' It'ad for the third lap and held it against McCany's -St'Cond and Brown's third all tht' way to th.. last lap during which Brown madt' all tht' right moves and slipped across the finish lint' first, leaving Willig second and McCarty third. Rich Morgan (Suz) had tht' holnhot in tht' second moto followed by Mark Fortin (Suz) and Brown. Willig's chances were dashed in a first turn crash. Fonin took the lead very soon and stayed there all the way past the checkers. Mike Harper (Suz) ran in second most of the way, but then crashed to last place which let Brown across for second. Vasco DeMellow came up from a mid-pack stan to finish third. Brown got off the line first in the third moto and held his lead against the assault of Fortin during four intense laps. Fortin got in front for the fifth lap, but the race was for six and Brown used it to slip back into the lead and across the finish line first. McCarty was third again for second overall. Willig combined points for third overall. In Division II of the 125cc Novices. Scott Castaneda (Yam) was the overall winner and prize bike hopeful. Richard Washburn (Suz) holcshot moto one. moved into the lead for good before finishing lap one. Jamie Adams (Suz) maneuvered into second by midway and Washburn hung onto third. Adams was in front of Castaneda off the line in moto two, but Castaneda again took over for the whole ride before the end of the first lap and was many seconds ahead at the finish. His closest pursuers were Jon Nauman (Hon) and David West (Suz). Adams had tangled with the turf. The third moto began with Lauren Godbee (Suz) leading and Adams in hot pursuit. Adams got around Godbee and opened out a lead that guaranteed him the coveted number one by his name. Castaneda had to work his way up from a less-thanterrific start and settle for second place this time around. Nauman again came across the finish line next in line. Chris Ladd, aboard a Suzuki, holeshot, led and won both the first and the third motos of the 125cc Junior r.ace, but Mike Halliday (WCH) did it in the second moto. Matt Elkins (Suz) plagued Ladd from behind all three motos and earned second overall for his efforts. Halliday wrapped up third overall. The 250cc Juniors saw Kevin Bixby (Yam) down on the stan of the first moto. but flying in from from start to finish in both of the remaining motos which was good enough for third overall. The first and second overalls went to Mark Bogger (Suz) and Craig Connelly for their thoroughly consistent, yet unspectacular. perfonnances. Greg Bonovich had two good rides. but crashed his way out of the results in the third moto. In the Open Novice race. Doug Pyne rode his Maico to the checkered flag first in Sunday's two motos. but by Monday morning SCOll Olnt>y had . figured out how to do it on his Yamaha and Pyne had to take a second in that moto. Kirk Carter (PRE) claimed st"cond overall and Russ Boehm third. Monday afternoon was all Pro racing and a show worth waiting for and definitely worth riding in. The $2000 purse was sweetened even more by a special addition from Harrison Construction. Dean Wiggins cartied the blue number one plate on his Maico to a triumphant double win of the Open class. crossing the finish line with nearly 20 seconds to spare both times. Wiggins led from the start in the first moto with Dave Wood (Yam) and Pat Richter following him all the way. The second time out, Brian Jodry (Suz) and Richter led off the stan, but by lap three, Wiggins was again in front and beginning to open out his lead. Danny "Magoo" Chandler, on a stock-looking Honda. smoked both 125cc motos. In the first moto Scott Rebuck (Suz) ran in second until his rear wheel began breaking up on about the 10th lap. He only traded his second for third, however, to Bradlt>y Harrison (Yam). Doug McRae (LOP) moved all the way to fourth from a second-to-Iast-place stan before time ran out. The second moto was a similar story except Rebuck stayed in second place all the way with Spoof Pena (Yam) pacing him from a few yards back most of the way. Then McRae came charging up to badger Rebuck, but crashed back to founh with only two laps to go. The pressure was off Rebuck and third place restored to Pena. Dave Wood (Yam) had his best ride in the first moto of the 2505. leading from his holeshot all the way to the o 00 0') ..-4 ..-4 M V ~ o ... u o Fun begins when you let the clutch lever out.JVl JVl JVl JVl JVl JVl LOW MILEACE DEMOS 1879 Suzuki TS 1211 All W/Leu Than 110 MI..
