much to continue and was hauled to
the pits'before the single file restart got
underway. Scott again took the lead
with Bubba Shobert and Terry Poovey
occupying the 2·3 positions. The order
stayed that way for three laps before
Poovey passed Shobert diving into turn
one. Then things stayed put to the
nag. Rob Crabbe finished fourth in
front of Danny Cartwright.
JB Racing's Garth Brow arrived in
turn one first in the final heat, but two
turns later he was following Bubba
Rush and Ricky Graham. It took two
laps for Graham to set up Rush, but
then he new past in turn three to take
the lead, which he held to the nag.
Rush, sponsored by Klaus Speedworks
and Edwards Motor Company, can·
tinued on in second while Brow did like·
wise in third. Randy Goss finished
fourth after getting by Tulsa's Dave
Bradley.
Junior Invitational
Sam McDonald, Phil's younger
brother, had the rest of the pack be·
)lind him on the first lap. Then Scott
Adams went zooming past to hold the
point position for the remaining laps.
McDonald's stint in second was limited
to another four laps by Jay Beach, but
after that McDonald held his ground.
Along with fourth· place Rich King,
who was on a 500cc Honda single. the
leaders pulled far ahead of the pack.
Semis
,Mi'!~ta:s Peter Hook leapt in
front of the first semi, towing Scott
Parker. Mike Kidd and Ty Cawley.
Kidd, whose engne broke a connecting
rod before the race, soon was up to
second and found himself in the lead
on the fourth lap when Hook went slid·
ing up to the hayba les between the fi m
two turns. Kidd led the rest of the race
and Team Army was in the National.
Parker, Tim Mertens and Steve More·
head finished next, but transferred to
the Trophy Race.
Rob Crabbe, sponsored by Lancaster
H·D and Knight Racing Frames, went
to the front of the pack in the other
semi, with Goss and Dave Bradley in
pursuit. Goss passed Bradley, but on
the same lap Steve Pendergraft went
down on turn three with his bike lying
on the edge of the groove. A lap later
they stopped the race. On the restart
Goss pulled the holeshot, but Bradley
pulled him and led for the next five
laps. Goss then went back out front as
Crabbe displaced Bradley. On the
final lap Crabbe dived outside of Goss
in turn three and went in front. Goss
was less than half a bikt!length behind
at the finish; still the points leader
would earn no points this day.
Trophy Race
After Wheelie King Doug Domokos
had wheeLied over a car a few times
and wheelied down the front straight
with Ms. Winston Lynn Griffis as a
passenger, the Trophy Race lined up.
Scott Parker went past Goss in' the set·
ond tum to take the lead and a lap
later Goss was put back to third by
Dave Bradley. The rundown stayed
put until two laps from the end when
Goss passed Bradley and went after
Parker. He went by Parker too, and
then just after Goss was by Parker was
sliding up into the turn two haybales.
Parker had only scratches, with Brad·
ley getting second over Willie Crabbe
and Phil Darcy.
National
Scott Drake, who had planned on
skipping this event and only changed
his mind the Wednesday before, fired
out in front with Ricky Graham, Hank
Scott and Mike Kidd closest to him.
Despite getting "kinda real sideways"
in turn four of the firs.! lap, four laps
went by with Drake still in the lead.
Finally Graham got a better drive
off turn four and whistled by by going
down the front straight. Graham start·
ed pulling away immediately as Scott
started to badger Drake. Behind them
a four·way battle was being fought for
fourth between Kidd, Gary Scott, Bill
Labrie and Terry Poovey.
Shortly after the midway point,
Hank Scott shot into second as he
passed' Drake on the backstraight.
Gary Scott had advanced to fourth
with Labrie, Kidd and Poovey follow·
ing. Bubba Shobert held down eighth
ahead of Bubba Rush and Rob Crabbe.
Graham wasn't looking back: "I never
look back if I'm winning. 1 was taught
not to look back. 1 just try and go as
fast as 1 can and hold a smooth line."
If he had looked back, he would have
seen a lot of mal estate between himself
and Hank SCotto.

With Graham, Hank Scott and
Drake continuing on to take the top
three spots, fourth place was debated
some more before Labrie snatched it.
Kidd got back in front of Gary Scott
for fifth as Terry Poovey finished seventh. Rush passed Shobert for eighth,
but Hi-Point/Scott Machine/Dennis
Bruster·sponsored S hob e rt earned
enough points to pass Freddie Spencer
and take the lead in the Rookie of the
Year battle.
Crabbe, Scott Pearson, Bill Schaeffer
and Garth Brow completed the list of
finishers. Ted Boody was listed in 14th
after pulling into the pits with unknown
difficulties.
Six riders are still in mathematical
contention for the Grand National
title, and the top three are only six
points apart with tWo races to go.
Should be a good one! Two!
