Houston resident Terry Kizer beat Mike Bruso 8.11/165.44 to 8.~0/1!>4.79 in Super Eliminator. In Pro Stock, Sid Pogue defeated Bob Carpenter 9.0~/145.6~ to 9.04/14~.4~. Pogue's reaction time was an unbelieveable .018 seconds, just .007 seconds away from redlighting! Terry Vance redlighted in tht" second round against Vicki Farr. And in Pro Comp, another )ocal, Mike Pizzitola. beat out John Baugh with an 8.14/141.l!8 run. In Top Fuel semi· final action, Sam Wills' clutch blew while running against Morale. Thanks to a clutch cover machined from billet, he was sent to the hospital with only minor bruises and a possible broken tal". but was released in time to watch the rest of the meet. Dave Shultz beat Chuck Custer for the Modified laurels; both were on Kawasakis. In the Stock division, the two finalists were again on Kaws with Mike Phillips defeating Gary Tackett. The Orange County Classic held at Orange County International Raceway in Irvine, CA, on Sept. 14 saw Wayne Davis snag the Top Fuel honors. Gary Scott, Steve Morehead, Ronnie Jones and Billy Labrie will be among those competing at Ascot's Sept. l!6 half mile Regional Championship event. Since it falls on the open weekend between the San Jpse Mile and the Ascot Half Mile National. there should be lots more competing. No rider has yet won the· Grand National Championship title without having won a race; the closest anyone ever came to it was in 196~ when Dick Mann took the Number One plate winning only one National.
