TEN YEARS AGO Don Vesco's Bonneville streamliner, "Big Red," powered by two Yamaha 350cc two stroke twins, set a new motorcycle speed record on the salt, averaging 251.924 mph from runs of 249.965 and 253.897. Vesco's new mark was over six mph above the existing mark. Later Vesco disconnected one engine and set a new 350cc mark of 197.813. All of this on pump gasoline, by the way. But see how much progress can be made in 10 years? Vesco's gone from a pair of 350cc two-stroke twins to a pair of 1300cc water-cooled fourstroke sixes ... New Grand National champion Gene Romero finished off the season in style by winning the half mile National at Ascot Park. Burritto (Tri) won his heat race, then passed early leader Mark Brelsford (H-D) on the seventh lap and went on to win. Brelsford finished second with Lloyd Houchins (Tri) third. In the Amateur main event, John Har.eIey got to the checkered flag first, and Gary Fisher got there second. Dennis Gildehaus, Jim Gresham, Scott Autrey, Jim Nicholson, Bruce Haserot and Harlan Bast. Greeves' Jim Wilson showed no ill effects from an injury-induced layoff, as he returned to action at CMC Saddleback race and won the 250 and 500cc Expert classes. Among those eating his dust that day were Russ Darnell, John DeSoto, Tim Hart, Briar Holcomb and Greg Harris. Rich Thorwaldson won the Cactus Cats first 0-37 hare scrambles, taking the lead after Tom Poteet got off course. The race was marred by tragedy when 19·year·old Don Hill was killed on the way to the smoke bomb after his front axle sheared in two places and forced him to crash. 9
