Christian and
Gagnon take final
night at IMS

SAN BERNARDINO, CA. SEPT. 10
Alan "Crazy" Christian warmed
up for this Saturday's California
State Championship by winning
his eighth Scratch Main of the
12
season at John La Deuceur's Inland
Motorcycle Speedway Wednesday night.
ChriSlian took the lead at the start
from his number twO starting position,
over Scott Autrey. Dubb Ferrell and
Dave Sims. Sims moved to the inside of
Ferrell to take third on the back chute
on lap O'1e. Sims then dumped it in
turn one on lap two sending his bike
into a series of endoes. He was all right
and able to get off the track under his
own power averting a red flag.
Autrey tried to close the gap on
Christian using the inside groove, but
was unable to get the job done giving
Alan a comfortable victory. Autrey
hung on for second with Ferrell third
and Sims getting credit for the wrap
up spot.
Phil Gagnon made it two weeks in a
row as he defeated a fast closing Gary
Ford in the Handicap Main. Dave
Miller got the lead at the start over
Curt Strommer and Gagnon. The lead
trio stayed the same way until Gagnon
got by teammate Strommer coming
out of turn four on lap two.
Gagnon then pulled alongside
Miller and his ailing bike and slipped
by on the inside in turn four on the
fourth lap. Ford moved into second
and closed fast on Gagnon on the final
lap, but ran out of time at Sid Sutton's
checkered flag. Finishing behind
Gagnon and Ford were Sterling Cogar.
Gene Woods, Strommer and Miller.
Pat Hawley, who had the tops of his
leathen stolen last week at IMS, had
better luck this week as he picked up
his fint ·Sec8Rd Division. Main of me '
year at IMS. Jeff Havacko's motor died
wben the gate went up, ending his
night early. Hawley had taken the lead
over Victor Robledo and Dennis
Abbott at the start. Robledo chased
Hawley until he bobbled in turn two
on lap four dropping himself from
second to fifth. Paul Belisle inherited
second with Dennis Bransford third.
Bransford. who is looking better each
and every week, blasted by Belisle on
the inside coming out of turn four on
the final lap to take second. Following
Hawley and Bransford at the finish
were Belisle, Abbott, Robledo and
Havacko.
Kerry Miller took his first Third
Division Main of the season at IMS in
the "Norman New Guys'" last appear·
ance of the year. Carlos Cardona and
Ron Blanton were the lead pair into
turn one on lap one with Blanton tak·
ing the lead when Cardona bobbled in
turn two.
Miller got by Ed Castro in the back
chute on lap two and then took tbe
lead from Blanton at the halfway
mark. Castro got by Blanton for second
at the white flag. John Pavano and
Mark Stahovich fell in turn four on the
final lap. It was Miller at the wire followed by Castro. Blanton. Cardona,
Stahovich and Pavano.
Tonight's show was the final
Wednesday of racing at IMS in 1980.
IMS will close out the season September
20 with the California State Cham·
pionship. Sixteen of the best riders in
Calfiornia will participate in an all
Scratch racing program. Gates open 6
p.m. with the first race set to begin at
8:00.
