National
There was plenty of activity in the
pitS prior to the National, especially in
Himlt Scott's area where a dozen hands
~franticallytearing apart and then
putting his engine back together. "It's
the'oil pump or something," said Scott.
'I"he oil won't circulate. It slowed down
in the final laps of the heat race. Sure,
it!s 'a major, but "Grogg" (Gary Peel)
and Tom (Cummings) have a lot of
good help."
Kidd took advantage of his outside
(grandstand) pole position to come up
with the lead as the field hit the back
stretch. Gary Scott ended that one lap
later with a pass into turn three and
led Kidd, Labrie, Pearson, Poovey
and Boody as the second lap ended.
Hank Scott, Goss and Graham were all
in mid-pack traffic. On the next lap
La brie slipped off the narrow groove
and lost five positions.
Scott lost the lead to Kidd on the
fourth tour and the pair began to play
a cat-and-mouse game, probing for
weaknesses while drawing away from
the pack by using their draft. The pair
played for 12 laps with Kidd in front
where it counted.
Poovey and Boody couldn't make up
their minds on who had third and
traded it back and forth at will for the
next dozen laps. Meanwhile, Goss was
making headway, having slowly
worked up to sixth on lap eight and
fifth by lap 14. Then he sets his sights
on Poovey and Boody.
Pearson had been as high as fourth
early on and was a strong fifth for the
middle of the 25 lap National. He
dropped out with apparent engine
problems on lap 18 joining similarly
affected Garth Brow who ended his
ride on lap 13. Jones. with a dropped
valve on lap 22, and Morehead with
igruuon problems on lap 24 would
complete the retirements.
Gary Scott took the lead from Kidd
on lap 17 with Kidd coming right
back. Kidd then encountered rear
wheel chatter under heavy braking
and that was all Scott needed. He was
past and gone while Kidd quickly
slipped to eighth. Poovey jumped into
second ahead of Goss, Boodie, Labrie
and Graham to set the final laps.
Scott continued his cruise to victory
and the checkered flag unchallenged
while Poovey, with a slowing engine,
couldn't hold off the charges of Goss
and then Boody. Goss was up on
Boody at the finish by less than a bike
length. Labrie edged Graham for fifth
by an even closer margin.
"It's nice to be back on the upswing
again and 1 don't think I could be
without the help of J. R. Kelley of KK
Motorcycle Supply and Jack Sisemore
of Sisemore Traveland who are my
sponsors. 1 also owe a lot to Edjtar
I'uhr who taught me all about Harleys.
He's given me a lot of support." Fuhr,
who suffered a heart attack seven
weeks ago, was in the pits, said Scott. •
