Newman exploded at every turn and seemed to jump to the next as he led Mike Clement (Yam). Wendell Simmons (Kaw), Alley Semar (Han) and Jeff Edwards (Suz) on the first lap. At mid-mota, the top positions remained the same with the exception that Semar bumped Simmons out of third. Jerry Surber was holding off Craig Raymond for sixth and took over fifth as second place Clement pulled off for chain tensioner repairs. With two laps to go. Newman had a healthy lead over Semar, Edwards, Simmons, Surber, Raymond and a surprisingly powerful Landrum. Misreading the finish line flags, Surber pulled off a lap early and the rest of the top five remained the same with Landrum landing a sixth after a disastrous start. The second 125cc Expert mota was Landrum's opportunity to get a shot at Newman, as Landrum, Edwards, Raymond and Keith Eldred trailed unjinxed Newman through the first turn and around the first lap. Mike Clement, who settled for an eighth in the' first mota after some mechanical difficulties forced him to pull off while in second, now held an early seventh, but was mo"ing up on the leaders. At the midway point, Newman held a I(}-second cushion on Landrum and was continuining to fatten it up as Edwards, Clement, Raymond, Sullivan and Semar followed. The finish line flagman saw the same parade pass the checkered flag as when he held up the halfway sign. Newman was untouched for the overall win as he finally won over his bad luck at Rio Bravo. Edwards' 3·3 finishes gave him second overall followed by Landrum (6-2), Semar (2-6) and Clement (8-4). It's obvious why Rio Bravo is one of Mickey Pizzitola's favorite tracks when he usually pulls holeshots and wins here. Pizzitola did one of his favorite things at one of his most favorite tracks as he p'!lIed the holeshot in the frrst 250cc Expert mota ahead of Ricky Glaser (Yarn), Keith Tarver (Yam), Darwin Huckabee (Hon) and Jeff Shaw (Hus). First lap action included an attempt by Huckabee to knock down a tree bigger than he. As he approached the. downhill before the tree, his back wheel hit the inside banking and sent Huckabee and Honda down the hill, separated in mid-air. As the rider hit the tree, the bike tumbled down the track. After what seemed a long time, Huckabee was helped up, sore, but- alright and ready to sit out the rest of the race. The mota continued and Glaser reo placed Pizzitola (Han) on lap two and David McClain (Han) charged into fourth behind Tarver. Lack of conditioning due to injury-induced off-time began to show early as Pizzitola began to fade behind Glaser. At the halfway point, Glaser held seven seconds on second-place Pizzitola who had both McClain and Derek Wedding in his shadow. Another tight trio of Shaw, Tarver and Scooter Bates followed. Moments later, Wedding DNF with mechanical problems and McClain popped Pizzitola for second. The order of the first moto finish was Glaser, McClain, Pizzitola, Bates and Shaw. Paul Baker took away one of Pizzi· tala's favorite things in the second mota. Baker got the holeshot, but highsided through the first turn to an unpleasant landing. Fortunately, everyone got by the downed rider and it was Pizzitola out front a few turns later. On the first lap, Paul Renfro (C-A), Wedding, Bates and Bubba Wilson (Han) trailed Pizzitola. Without any mechanical problems, Wedding nailed the lead two laps later while Glaser was working up from sixth place. It took Glaser just over half the mota to overtake Pizzitola and from there he followed Wedding to the finiSh, confident of the overall since Wedding DNF the first mota. Glaser had an excellent ride, considering he had trashed out his gear box in the first mota and rode the second moto with only three gears. The overall 250cc Expert results were: Glaser (1-2), Pizzitola (3-3), Wilson (74), Shaw (4-7), and Renfro (8-5). • Boots, Bells, and everything in between, your Kawasaki dealer has all the right gear for street, motocross and enduros, including the new blue Team K enduro outfit.
