Honda rider Craig •. Dale completed the first lap in third " place with Mike Tripes running fourth r' and Yamaha-mounted Dan Walker fifth. Chandler was off to a slow start t as the former Maico star used the first :> few laps to acquaint himself to the track after arriving late from his northern California home and missing practice. .bl Soon Chandler was on the move, reeling in and passing Walker, Dale and Jackson while Tripes and Holland battled for the lead. Tripes finally put away the challenge from the younger Holland and pulled out a slight lead. Chandler passed Holland on the tricky downhill off-camber left turn and moved in on Tripes' rear wheel. With two laps remaining Ch;wdler tried to pass on the dropaway jumps near the finish line only to lose valuable time as he overshot the next corner and Tripes regained the lead. At the checkers it was Tripes, Chandler and Holland. Holland went for the holeshot in ~ race two and narrowly headed Jackson It for the lead as the pack carved their way through the first turn. Tripes was running third followed by Dale and Chandler at the completion of laps one and two. Jackson dropped out on lap three with mechanical problems as Holland continued to lead. Rick Johnson sweeps Speedway J.J.7 MX By Rod Eschenberg CHULA VISTA, CA, AUG. 27 Yamaha rider Rick Johnson became the second rider in the history of Speedway 117's CMC motocross to score a complete sweep of the three Pro classes in a .single night with a perfect six for six moto ride. Actually Johnson's win binge was a first, as when Mike Tripes turned the tTick last year, he did not win all six, motos. Adding to his complete domination of- the Coke Pros, was Rick's new record in the KPRI Competition hill jump-off with an incredible 72 feet, 6 inch effort! Johnson's mastery of the three-size motorcycles was even more impressive as two machines were twostrokes and the Open machine was the big 500cc Yamaha thumper that he had used to set the record earlier in the year. This time, however. he blasted the record on the 250cc size machine. The Intermediate classes featured wins by the point leaders in the 500s and the I25s as Ric Mahlmeister took an easy win in the big bore class over Perennial challenger Craig Infeld, and Tom Hanley (Yamaha of Pacific Beach) squeaked out a tight win in the 125s afte,r Alba Honda rider Jon Faure went out in the second moto after winning the fmt round. The 250s and the Minis saw hard riding wins posted by Rick Kenyon and John Conney, respectively. Kenyon bested a fast improving Todd Lesser and Conney upset point leader Frankie Brundage for the second straight week. The outstanding Junior wins came in the I25s and the Minis as Randy Rush ran away with the I25s. leaving Scott Bowman and Rudolfo Sevilla to battle for the runner-up spot with the 500 PRO: 1. Draskovich, Watson top CRC San Diego qualifier By Nanette Marie CARLSBAD, CA, AUG. 51 The third round of qualifiers for the San Diego Stadium Amateur Supercross Championships moved down to Carlsbad Raceway where the California Racing Club put on the fifth-Sunday motocross, with riders competing not only for trophies or Pro payback, but a shot to ride in San Diego Stadium the night after the big AMA Supercross Series finale. In the Professional ranks, Don Draskovich was the top rider of the afternoon, running away with both motos and the Open Pro overall, while Dan Watson fought off Todd Clark for the 250cc win, and Tibbs McCullough racked up a victory in the 125cc category. The big Pro purse of the weekend was over at Saddleback, but nearly 20 Pros still showed up to race, and all three of the divisions were run in the . same moto, the 250s and Opens going on the first gate, and all of the 125s starting from the second gate. Round one saw Kawasaki-mounted Dave Hamada grab the lead in the 250s, with Watson, Greg Youngblood, Todd Clark, Scott Curtis and Jerry Black battling for position in the 250cc ranks, while Draskovich and Jim Burt set up their Open tangle. with Burt holding the early advantage. In the 250cc action Hamada's lead was shortlived after he crashed himself back into fourth during the first half of the race, which gave Watson the lead in the class over Youngblood and Clark. Draskovich was on the move with his Yamaha 465, and picked his way effortlessly through the 250cc pack and bolted out into the lead before the halfway point in the moto. From there he pulled away to a very good lead, and rolled across the finish with the first moto victory, as Burt DNF his ride. Watson stayed on top of the 250cc division for the remainder of the race but Hamada made a late charge from fourth to overtake both Clark and Youngblood to gain the runner-up slot at the finish line. Youngblood was the next to take the checkers, followed by Clark. and Curtis, while Jerry Black suffered bike problems and had to pull off. Second round action' of the bigger bikes in the Pro ranks was all Draskovich, as he grabbed the holeshot, and spent the entire 12 laps pulling away. Todd Clark took advantage of every opportunity he could early in the race and moved up into first 250cc. slipping past Watson in the process. Watson began to charge back from his mid-pack start in the race, and moved all the way up to second, but at that point he had the overall in the bag. and all he had to do was finish in that position. He took no chances and stayed right where he was at. Hamada. in the meantime, got off in dead last through the first turn. and had to get by Youngblood. Black, and Curtis to pull into third. At the finish, the order was Draskovich way out front for the Open win, Clark in front of all the 250s, Watson second. and Hamada, Black and Youngblood rounding out the top five. Overall in the 250cc category. Watson went home with the biggest chunk of the payback, with Clark second, and Hamada third. One-two-five action was furious all day long, as the first moto saw the lead change hands between four different ciders, before finally being controlled by Tibbs McCullough. In moto one, McCullough grabbed the holeshot with Roy Gomez, Robbie Nolin and Paul Cano behind. McCullough held onto the first spot for the first three laps before going down and dropping to third, then it was Nolin who took over. Nolin seized after leading for the next two laps, which gave Gomez the front-running position. Gomez lost it on the double jumps after the horseshoe, and ended up in the trees off to the side of the track, then McCullough was back on top again. Cano dropped out early with bike problems, and Gomez remounted back in second, and when the checkers came out, it was McCullough, Gomez and Don'nie .Best the only three I25cc Pros to survive the moto. Round two saw Mike Beier grab the early lead, with McCullough. Gomez and Best battling for position behind. McCullough took over on the second time around, and from there he went untouched all the way to the checkers. Beier ran second the rest of the way as Best took third after Gomez suffered a flat rear tire and had to push it across. In the overall standings it was McCullough, Best and Gomez taking the first three slots, with Beier grabbing fourth. o 00 (j) ... Results MINI NOV: 1. Don Feeley (Vaml; 2. Richard Fleming IVam); 3.
