CA, SEPT. 5 Both Bobby Schwanz and Shawn Moran made respectable show· ings on their return to American speedway at Costa Mesa. Both riders made a main event; Bobby won the Scratch Main and Shawn was ;fourth in the Handicap Main. s The Third Division riders are looking more like Second Division racers as the season winds down. ]n the Third Division Main. Ed Castro. riding from the ] O-yard line. worked his way through traffic to take second behind zero-yard-Iiner Shane McDonald. Third was Ron Blanton. Second Division Main winner Alan Martin will now be viewing the race from farther back rather than the zero'yard line. Martin beat out. and was really never challenged by. Chris Hedge and ]O'yard line rider Wes Randolph who mana~d to work his way through traffic, but was unable to rass Hedges. The Handicap Main began with a bang! Shawn Moran and Lance King collided and Moran took out a piece of the crash wall. King also went down hard. but was unable to make the restart. On . the restart Danny "Berzerko" Becker from the 20-yard line was out front. Berzerko looked hot all night. showing strong glimpses of the Becker of days gone by. Danny was really only challenged once by Dave Sims. Becker held him off, pulled away and delighted the fans with the win. When he crossed the J line. he knew he still had quite a few fans. John Sandona was second followed by Sims, Shawn Moran and Alan Christian. The grand Finale was. of course, the Scratch Main. Sims and Christian had made both mains and were now up against Dave DeTemple and Bobby Schwartz. When the gate went up, Christian was totally surprised because in tum one, he was in third place. Alan was never able to recover from that; in fact. it was all he could do to hold off DeTemple. U Schwaru took the win unchallenged followed by Sims. Christian and DeTemple. On September ]2. Scott Autrey and Dennis Slgalos will return. Both will be riding to beat Christian. Autrey to practice for the Nationals on October 11 and Si~al05 to prove he can do it twice. • 22nd.
