Gatll.r. N....... ".tller. Call ERIC Baker cooks at cKENNA SRAGP By Sue Senn o ORANGE, CA, AUG. 10 00 0') ...-4 The hottest name in grand prix racing at this time is Mike Baker. Baker is winning every race he enters and for the first time in his racing career, Craig Adams is dis· covering how it feels to take second. At the Southland Racing Associa· tion's Saddleback GP, Baker (Yam) and Adams (KTM) put on a spectacu· lar side by side in the 250cc race. Adams had a slight edge from lap one going into the sixth of eight laps. The seven mile course, which was dusty' and tight, wound around into the Saddleback cliffs, through a sand wash then up and down a few hills into a big bowl at the finish. Starting the seventh lap, Craig was leading through the bowl with Mike right on his tail. As they came upon heavy traffic of about·to·be·lapped Beginners, Craig took the inside and Mike swung out. The traffic moved in, cutting Craig off and Mike took the lead be· coming untouchable for the last two laps. Behind the dynamic duo. Danny Sanchez was leading a tight pack con· sisting of Dave Wentz, Karl Davis, Warren Barr, Mark Zoller, Don Miller and Steve Blakely. Davis. Barr and Blakely went down, leaving the top Experts finishing in the above order. Top Amateurs were Fred Strong, Marty Gomez and Charles Montilepre. Novice honors went to Kenny Guyett, Don Kirk and Rob Hall. Bill Lunda claimed an easy first Beginner followed by Lee Patten, Michael Zepeda and Ian McCafferty. Lynn McGraw (Yam) who rides for Rustan Products, enjoyed a few laps of dicing with Bryon Farnsworth (Yam) before moving out alone and leaving the battle to his fellow Seniors, Farns· worth, Lars Larsson (Hus), Charlie Conway (KTM), Don Mardon, the legendary "Feets" Minert (BSA) and Vern Heth (Yam). Minert and,Heth went down but the top Open Experts finished as above. First Amateur, sixth overall went to a l25cc Yamaha ridden by the remark· able Gary Little. Steve Bigler (Yam) claimed first 250cc while Rick Hobbs and Joel Parker took second and third Amateur. First Novice was easily won by another l25cc Yamaha. This one was ridden by East/West member, Cliff Stevens. "Magic Man" Mark Fleming was second Novice followed by Jack McCafferty. Top Beginners were all on Open bikes: Jim Haye, Cliff Barak and Jim Luallin. At the end of the day, the smiling McGraw said he was pleased with his win but his big treat was watching his 19·year·old daughter Wendy take first girl in the 200cc class. The Open race closely resembled the 250 race as it again featured the dynamic duo of Baker and Adams. Only this time they were joined by green clad Kawasaki rider Mark Asbury. The three had a tremendous lead over the pack of Paul Huffman, (KTM), Lars Larsson (Hus), Rusty Clarke (Hus), Mike Drown and Robert Pfetzing {Yam). Pfetzing is the number one plate holder in the 200cc class and made this ride on a two year old stock Yamaha just for fun. Huffman went out, leaving an exciting Privateer Eric McKenna, current 500cc National Amateur Champion, turned back the factory teams by riding his Euro-Cycle tuned Maico to 1st Overall Motorcycle in the 1980 S.C.O.R.E.
