I I simple mathematics. however, put impact of this event into focus. With the auumed aveRF coolIDlI width of 15 feet and a length of %1 miles (%55 1ess approximate Jo Open area of %0 miles) plus four anu of four acres each, the direct impact of the event will aft leu' than 400 acres. Assuming total and complete devastation take place due to this event, impact of the COCA win 0.00005!1%. I fmd it difflCU1t to undentaDd w there is all this .controversy exiistiJ"lIII over !he disturbance of six tenths one square mile of land. Due to orb pressures. the next ezpansion of t such u Banto. or Victorville will much more in terms of 1011 of na desert area. Let's put things in penpeetive. Johnson Valley to Parker event have no measureable impact on th COCA overall. If concerned dese observers want IOmething to k them busy, I suggest they take a 100 at the proposed $% billion coal·fir generating plant that Edison wanu t build in Rice. This plant, by the way will use !I00 rail can of coal per da and, if buill, will be right in the pat of the Johnson to Parker race. o 00 ~ America's weekly motorcycle neWspaper Sharon Clayton. Thanks from the Shores My family and I will never forget the summer of 1980. This is !he year that we ciroYe over 14,000 miles around the United States to put on 10 races and fiDd out what's going on at !he grass roots level. The Shc= family (Big Jerry, wife Shirley, IOn Litde Jerry and daughter Liz) worked all summer long putting on our AME/Honda Ameritan Mini· cycle Championship Series, which wu abo sponsored by Hondaline, KaI· Card, Super Seer, Ouralube, BolIch, Pro·Trac and Nippondenso. A lot of people said it couldn't be done, but wherever we went people were really fantastic and eYeD went out of their ways to tell our sponson how much they enjoyed it. As with my fim year of a promotion, things didn't always go perfectly, but they went pretty dam well. A founda· tion was built for the future, and we got aCl'WS lOme new ideu. We thank God that everything went u well as it did aDd safely. We're looking forward to our upcoming evenu with a new attitude and are eagerly planning for '81. Our thanks to all our Regional Mana~, Robert Smith, Bill GuIle, Gene Lewis, Jerry Surber, Tony Gonzales, Ralph Huffman and Oren T,ylor. Our special thanks to our sponson, Honda, Hondaline, Super Seer. Kal· Card, Bosch, Duralube, Pro-Trac and Nippondenso for having vision and helping the kids, sticking with us through thick and thin. Our thanks to the families and the racers themselves who rode with AME especially thole who rode the who~ circuit. And our heartiest congratula· tions to our fine National Champions, George Holland, Todd Hewatt. Troy Blake, and Bryan Taylor. JERRY & SHIRLEY SHORE American MotOCTOlS Enterprises, Inc. Reseda, CA Coyote Creek revisited As promised in our article ("Return to Coyote Creek," Cycle NRIS 17, Feb. %7, 1980) we hikrd to check oUt !he c10Ied road mentioned in !he article. The old road that nms from !he Schober Mine down to Bishop Creek is ItiII c10Ied to vehicles. The road, Rarting juR _nh of the Bishop Creek I..odge. riles about !GOO feet in 5~ to four miles. The firR mile is DOt pasable to four·wbeel vehicles due to rock slides in IeY'eI'a1 places, but after that it is in su.;r;:ngly good shape after 55 years. is a sign at the bottom indicating c1oIure, but DOlle at the top. Some bike trails were visable 10 I stopped at the Inyo National Forest headquanen in Bishop and informed them of the laclt of ligna at the top. I pointed out what a trap (citation·type) It would be for riden. Our hike was taken on a 90 degree day with no shade the entire. distance. Having been away from the hiking bit for Ie'YeD yean. tongue·draging and a few blisten were encountered. We could fmd little reason in our minda for this foad's cIomre. We believe it should be open for all to enjoy. But until it's opened, if you do the Coyote Creek ride, play it cool and doD't come down the lIIOUDtain from the Schober Mine. Best to leave it to . the hiken for now. DONALD E.L. BETSWORlli DONALD W. BETSWORlli Torrance, CA DeerBLM••. I wish to add my cc.unenu aad oblcrvatioas relame to the Dnft EIS for the 1980 JQImson Valley to Parker Motorcycle Race. First of aD. I recommend that this proposed race be allowed to run. with oatfvrtiwr ~ of the initial posed coune and conditions (~ Action). One ~ble ezception, m my view, would be to aDow the event to run eYeD if the areas an moist due to rain. To run the event on wet ground would mean that the feared dust' pro· blem would be eliminated and the event would be S4fn- for the partici. panu. With all the talk and claimed "conuoversy" regarding this event, the distant oblcrver might conclude that !he running of this. and/or, similar evenu will have a major effect on !he eco1ogy of the California deIert. Some Politicel biker I'm a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee for the state' Hungry Valley ORV project "Hungry 7, " as we an known. ~ this and my involvement with the BLM's COCA Desen Plan, I go I've become a "political biker" (mua be getting oId1). As such, I've found your California and Washington articles to be quit incisive - 10 much 10 that the H 7 were all accusing each other having written the fint article. It w 10 accurately reported and ezpl'Uled our thoughu 10 well that anyone of us might well have written it - but we didn't. Anyway, to keep abreut of what's going on, I'm subscribing to your weekly rag. So here's my $%0 - my-kid really didn't need that new rear tire for his scoot, anyhow.
