Chuck Palmgren gave the 650cc Yamaha vertical twin its first National win as he rode to victory in the 50·lap dirt track National at the one and one~ghth mile track at Nazareth, PA.· The following day's mile National in IndianpoJis fell to rookie Dave Aldana, who was riding the injured Dick Mann's BSA. The win kept Aldana in the points chase for the title, behind leaders Jim Rice and Gene Romero. , Men and machines tackled the salt flats at Bonneville, but the ultimate speed record for bikes went unbroken. Don Vesco, using a streamliner with two !l50cc Yamaha twins, went 240.244 ph, but fell five mph short of the record of 245.667 set by a doubleengined Triumph streamliner. Don Sliger almost broke the 200 mph barrier for non-streamlined bikes with a 194 mph pass on a double·engined Royal-Enfield. A day later he switched from pump gas to 92% nitro, quali.fied at 203 mph, but then shattered the clutch. Skokie, Illinois' Warner Riley set a pair of records on HarleyDavidsons. In all, 62 new records hit the books. l\Iike Cone dominated the 250cc action as the 1970 road racing season in Texas came to an end. Larry Beal rode a Harley-Davidson to the Open victory, defeating Joey Delgado (Hon) and Jet Tharp (Yam). The two-race North/South California MX team race challenge came to an end at Bay Mare, with the South again defeating the North, this time 165136. Standouts for the South were Billy Clements, John DeSoto and Mark.Blackwell. High point man for > the North was Claus Nielson, who re. placed Sweden-bound Bob Grossi, winner of the previous week's race. It was announced that Gary Nixon and Yvon DuHamel would ride Britain's Race of the Year at Mallory Park. Nixon was slated for a Triumph ride; DuHamel was to be Yamaha£ mounted. t , The Los Angeles Police Department called for a "positive approach" to Gproblems created through off-road rid'ing, primarily through the establishment of more public and private riding areas. Unveiling their "Operation "Trail Bike," LAPD revealed that over 2,000 complaints had been received since ihe first of the year about off5reet operation of motorcycles and < minibikes. }George Kerker (Nor) out-dueled John McGilliary (BSA) in the Heavy' weight Production battle at an ACA road race in Carlsbad, CA. Later, ,0n another Norton in the Senior GP wars, Kerker bested Cal Rayborn's track record. Pat Evans rode a Suzuki to the 250cc GP win. The San Gabriel Valley Motorcycle Club survived an astounding amount of hassle to find an event site, and then ;ran their European Scrambles.
