;; Northern Califc-'..-Northern Nevada-Oregon-Washington-Idaho-Utah-Alaska-Canada- Northern California-Northern Nevada-Oregon-Washington-Idaho-Utati-AI =NORTHERN DATELINE ~ Shultz smokes E over Marysville MX sand '0 00 ~ By Mel White MARYSVILLE, CA , AUG . 17 ~ They called it a "Hat Race" at C(") . Marysville today and everyone needed one. Winners got theirs ..0 free, but not in time to shelter t ~ them from the bright, not- too-hot sun that added to summer tans without unduly drying the track. ~ As usual , the promoter devoted the Q,) endless hours of work needed to create CI) and keep the -conditions that set the Marysville track apart from any other racing facility in northern California. The deep sand gets rough and riders really like that, but not very dusty if the water trucks keep doing their jobs - and they always do - and riders respond by showing up in larger num bers than any place else. Among the large number of riders at Marysville today was Darrell Shultz who left no doubts in anyone'smind why he , out of the other possible local choices, is the one with the factory ride on the . National circuit. It was not a trick works machine, but rather a production-type Suzuki that Darrell used to sweep through the 250cc Semi-pro ranks both times out. Shultz was delayed at the start of both motos by other people's crashes which put him practically in last place each time. The Yamaha of Pete Langley clearly took the holeshot in the first moto. Allen Berluti (Mai) was next and Randy Losh (Mai) third . Langley soon traded with Berluti .and finally dumped for good, taking Eric McKenna (Mai) into the pits for repairs With him . Randy Chapman (Mai) followed Berluti with Brad Emery (Yarn) , Dave Wood (Yam) and .Dave Coupe (Mai) next. Meanwhile, Darrell appeared to be in a freeway fast lane, baking by the. slower traffic with seemingly little trouble. just past the midway point Shultz took over the front spot from Belruti and pulled out a nice lead be fore getting to the finish line. Coupe pulled the ' holeshot . in the second moto and stayed in front for several laps. Berluti moved into second , but DNF after a couple of laps. McKenna kept everything on his machine this time and got in front of Wood and Coupe, but could not hold off Shultz who carne blazing by from the back of the pack to finish well in front again. Langley, aboard an . Open bike for the first time, flew down the starting area in front of everyone else in the first moto of the Open Pro event , but didn't seem to know quite how to handle the comer. Brian jodry (Suz) took over for most of the first lap until he lost his chain. Dean Wiggins (Mai) inherited the lead and held onto it all the way. Berluti, Pat Richter and McKenna, all Maico-mcunted, vied for second. McKenna claimed it at the checkered flag. jodry pulled the holeshot in the second moto and stayed in the front most of the way. Berluti shadowedjodry lap after lap, apparently studying the situation. With two laps to go, Berluti passed jodry over a jump only to have jodry pass him back a quarter of a lap later. On the . final circuit, Berluti made his move again and this time held offjodry to the finish line. Cloyse Holland (Hon) shot through the hole first in the 125cc Pro race, but it was Rodney Smith and Bradley Harrison, both on Yamahas , who :: ..... c 38 Afterwards , Mullins , ·. very happy about his first 125cc GP win this season, commented, "I wanted this one real bad. I knew if 1 was going to beat Glover it would be here. This is my horne track and Glover's Honda makes too much horsepower' to ever have a chance at the L.A. tracks with their long straights." In Lightweight Superstreet action, Bob Runyon (Smith Machine & Quandry/DKG Yarn 400) took the win after early charger jeff Hagan (Yam 400) dropped out. Martin Sachs (Yarn 400) was second and Dan Andersen third (Yarn 500) . Fred Merkle rode a great race from the back row after a dragging clutch caused him to be sent back on a false start. Merkle (Yam 400) made hisway up to second place from the back only to be disqualified in a post race tech inspection. Pat Eagan (Ontario Moto Tech/ND/ Honda Hawk) battled with Mark Ingalls (T.T. Motors/Berkeley Yamaha/Champion Plugs/Yam 400) in 430cc Production and won unofficially. But after the race, a technical pro· test was lodged against Eagan's bike for illegal wheel components (not adhering to production rules). The results stand under protest until AFM National decides the outcome. Mike Spencer (Champion M/C/ LockharrCoolers/Kal-Gard) used Kawasaki 650 and 550 machines to win 550cc Bo~ Stock, 750cc Production and Heavyweight Superstreet. Also many thanks go out to Art Clattke, manager of Golden State Raceway for his help in providing a good racing 'facility for the AFM these past few seasons. Art is moving on to a new job managing a racing facility in Medford , OR. battled for the lead during most of the race. They were many seconds ahead of third place before Harrison finally pulled a little bit away and safely got to the finish line ahead of Smith. joey Schlag (KTM) shadowed Ken McKenzie (Suz) for third and got past with little time or space to spare. Scott Rebuck (Suz) swept the second moto . By mid- race, Harrison moved up to challenge him and by the fifth lap, they had a 20-second lead over third place. Rebuck held his own all the way to the finish line forcing Harrison to settle for second place this time out. Results 125 EX: 1. Bradley Harrison (Vam); 2. Rodney Smith (Vam); 3. There are new ups, new downs, new turns and lots of whoops. One particular set 'of whoops almost defied any attempt at a rhythmic crossing. Instead, it launched many a rider, with a slap of the bike seat against the rider's seat, into an unstylish landing or spit them off entirely. The track is a little tight for Open class bikes, but even those riders agreed that it offered enough challenge to irnpress them favorably. It was a hot, muggy, energy-draining day, but continuous watering kept the anticipated dust under control. The 250cc Pros were the first out on the new course. Rowdy Blasdell (Yam) led around the new third U· turn with Tim Michlitsch (Yam) and jim Anderson (Yam) hot on his trail. After only one lap, Rowdy was out of it
