As his friend, I enjoyed his brilliance and his generous nature. From the day I met him , quite by chance, at the Utah State Prison bike show three yean ago, he encouraged me as a rnotojournalist and gave me advice when· ever I asked, without worrying that the other magazines I also freelanced to , o r worked for. were his competitors. Whenever 1 wanted to talk motorcycles or magazines. Larry was 7leveT too busy.. He was a unique person, and motorcycling will be the poorer with him gone. Shadow Mountain enjoyment key Recently our club has encountered difficulty camping on public land administered by the Bureau of Land Management in the Shadow Mountains area , near El Mirage Dry Lake. On two different occasions we were told by Sheriffs deputies to lea ve the area because we did not have written permission to occupy public . land, as required by county ordinances. After checking with the BLM and the San Bernardino County Sheriff, we seem to have the matter straightened ou t and I hope that our findings will help other riders enjoy this area : 1. Always carry the latest BLM California Desert Vehicle Designation map of the area you are riding in . This is your "written permission" to ride on public lands. 2. If .you are contacted by a Sheriffs deputy and he insists t ha t you leave , gather as much inform ation as possible including name of deputy, date, time and exact location. Call the Barstow office of the Bureau of Land Management. If possible talk to Chief Area Ranger, Ken Kleiber 714 /256!l591. The Shadow Mountains will be conven ed to private la nd in a few years . so ride in the area and enjoy it while it lasts . DAVE BEAUMONT L.E.R.C . Motorcycle Club Covina , CA Open letter to Brad Lackey Congratulations on your second place fin ish in the 500cc Grand Prix World Championships for 1980 . You upheld the honor of the USA through 24 pressure packed motos aga ins t the best riders in th e worl d . You rode hard and you rode well . You rode fast and you rode smart. You came back from the heart br eaking DNFs at Valkenswaard and Carlsbad that seem ed to leave yo~ little chance for the Championship . You came back from these d isappointmen ts and entered the final race a t Ettelb ruck, Luxe m bou rg only one slim po int behind eventual Cham pion Andre ¥~!tl.ef~·~ : " '. _ ' In the final round fate was not on your side as a series of events blocked your efforts to win the Championship. But in spite of these handicaps you went for it . You gave it your best shot and showed that you have the heart of a true Champion. In the first moto you came from dead last to fifth by the end, even trying to pass Carlqvist for fourth on the finallap . And in the last moto you gave it you r all too . The competition knows you were there. They won 't forget you, and we won't forget you . We are proud of you r efforts, and we are proud of you . We are cheering you on all the way. Again we say thanks for an inspiring season. GEOFFREY T. FOX Moto·X Fox BOB FOX Fox Factory Campbell. CA Godspe ed. Larry On Saturday. La rry Kurnferrnan , the ed itor of Sup ercycle. La rry was going to visit relatives in W isconsin after attending th e Sturgis rally in South Dakota for the magazine. It was a biker's journ ey and a biker's dea th . The readership of Cycle N ews may no t overlap very much with that of Supercycle. But perhaps more readers t ha n one might think will know of Larry because he was in motojournalism a number of yea rs. He even wrote for Dirt Bik e when he was at Hi-Torque Publicat ions . Be that as it may. som e of us think the success and future of motorcycling are and will be affected by all riders caring a bout each other. whether dirt or street. Larry was intensely concerned abo u t motorcycles and thei r rid ers . alwa ys crusading. trying to sti mula te m otorcyclists to do whatever th ey need ed to do to keep their fr eedom . I can't think of a ny better measure of the man than his ability to relate to all kinds of people. HB7702, th e bill that wou ld make !l.5 million acres ofland running from the Oregon border to th e Sa n Bernardino Mountains into Wilder· ness has passed the House and, accord ing to the L.A . T imes, is expected to pass the Senate this fall . Our only hope is to get Senator Alan Cranston to modify the bill to exclude _the Sequoia National Forest (Kennedy Meadows) from this bill . According to the T im es, Cranston is expected to try to ge t 45 ,000 acres in the Mt. Baldy area set aside for skiers so if we all write Senator Cranston maybe he'll save Kenndy Meadows too. If not, when the snow falls this winter it will mark the end of th e cow trailing in the Sierras forever. Write to; Senator Alan D. Cranston, 229 Russel Senate Office Bldg., Washington. DC 20510 . MIKE ADAMS Huntington Beach, CA Industry starts t o back .the Duck Two industrymanufacturers are a nnouncing their public and finanacial support of th e Phantom Duck Legal Fund. This sup po rt is to assist the Fund in its current litigation with the BLM in an effort to prevent future bias and abuses of this agency regarding the use of public lands for recrea tional purposes. Roland Reed of Maxima Ra cing Lubricants and C.H. Wheat of International MotorSports . are supporting the Phantom Duck Legal Fund by donating a portion of their product sales during the period from August 15 to October I , 1980. Maxima Racing Lubricants will donate $1 for each case of oil purchased during their pe riod and International MotorSports (IMS) will forward 5 % of their sales to th e Fund. • . There has been limited financial support given to the Phantom Du ck Legal Fund from the industry in gen· eral. The vast majority of contributions have come from individual motor cyclists. and th e success of this cu rrent litigation is crucially dependent upon financial support for the Fund's legal tea m. The sport of motorcycling has su p po rted us for many years; now it 's our tum to sup po rt the sport. We hope that m a ny more ind ustry bu sinesses retailers . dist ributors. wholesalers and manufacturers - will follow our efforts to help support and protect th e rig h ts of the people who have enabled us to succeed in th e m otorcycle market.
