Baldwin led teamma te Roberto Pietri an d Racecrafter's Ha rry Klinzmann across the finish line . 1 Only 18 riders gridded for the main ~ent and it was points leader Eddie Lawson on the pole by virtue of his faster heat rac e victory. And true to form it was Lawson who held the lead at the end of the first four laps. Gqpe at the start was front row sitter Roberto Pietri. A conn ecting rod had let go in his Honda's motor. By the th ird lap Cooley had worked his way up to second and two laps later he moved his Yoehimura SuzUki ahead of Lawson's Kawasaki and began to stretch his lead. Baldwin held third pla ce for most of the race, giving up the show position for two laps - the sixth and seventh - to Aldana . who then dropped ba ck and ran fourth for the remainder of the rac e. Behind the front four a race 'Iong battle took place between Klin zma nn and Parme with GSM/Kal·Gard sponsored Parme getting .the upper hand at the finish . Cooley's margin of ~tory was six seconds and in winner's circle cere- monies , which runner-up Eddie Lawson skipped, Gooley took tim e to praise the crew for the work they'd done between his heat race crash and the start of the main . "My crew worked their butts off to get me back in th e race. I never count myself out, but you just never know. " Prior to the ra ce Coo ley, when asked how his bandaged left hand felt , said, "O K. but..." He then pointed to his head and made a gesture to indicate he wasn't sure how his mental outlook was. His win dispelled any thoughts that his heat race crash had detuned him . He thanked sponsors Vetter. A!~i .
