Snorteland stompsCRC Saddleback MX By Greg Taylor ORANGE, CA , AUG . 10 Cool . breezes , clear skies and stiff competition drew many of the Southland's finest riders to the California Racing Club's Saddleback race. Pete Snorteland posted four mota wins at CRC Saddleback. Smith, Semics, Johnson top CMC . CarlsbadMX By Patti Firth-Trotter CARLSBAD. CA . AUG . 10 If you were not afraid of getting a heat stroke, or had not traveled north for the Bosch Series' you may well have been one of the 36 hundred or so racers who showed up at Carlsbad Raceway to try and get the win and increase your cash flow. A fairly large group of the regular Continental Mote-sports Club riders were present, but to some of us the thrill of the day was watching all of the women riders who were get ting a feel for the track prior to the Women's Nationals. A combined class of 125 and 500cc Pro riders had the first go at the track. LOP rider Gary Semics was the first of the 500cc riders to get going with Up Tite Husky-sponsored Alan Smith not leaving much space between them . Yamaha -mounted Randy Norman had the th ird slot with Dale Anderson (Mai) fourth and John Lusignan (Yam) fifth . Yamaha Flash Rick Johnson was off the line first for the 125cc riders. He was followed very closely by another Yamaha hotshoe, Robbie Nolin, who was followed by yet another Yamaha with Rik Nielsen aboard . . As the riders came around for the second lap Smith had grabbed the lead away from Semics and was going fOT the win . As the laps checked off the 500cc riders were very surprised to find that Johnson had worked his way through the pack of big bikes and into third. Rick was able to hold that place for only ·a short while , Randy Norman nudged him and regained his third place. At the end of the 14 laps they crossed under the checkers in 'this order: Smith, Sem ics, Norman, J ohnson.Nolan, Nielsen , and Watson. The second time the riders met An derson smoked his new Maico around the Suzuki Tower to take the holeshot , but Dale had little luck in hold ing off Semics and Smith. Semics swooped the lead away to begin his quest for the overall win. Getting signals from his dad, Thomas Smith, Alan was aware of the time he had to make up. Alan has not had his dad's help for the past month as Tom had a quadruple heart bypass operation five weeks ago . It 's good to see you back Tom. Lap four is when Alan made his move on Semics. The pass was successful and Alan ended the da y with the overall win. Rik Nielsen took an early lead for the 125cc riders with Nolin and Johnson in hot pursuit. It took Johnson only four and a ha lf laps to pass all of the 125cc riders and get int o the pack of Open bikes. Johnson, Nolin and Nielsen took home the day 's dollars. Semics , on his Lee Ramage-tuned Yamaha , snagged the holeshot and led the entire 14 laps of the first 250cc Pro moto. As the pack of riders was rounding the first tum of the race Rick Johnson went down and was unable to restart for awhile. Not to be discouraged Rick finally took off and began his assaul t' on the leaders. Up in front the leaders were Sem ics, David Hammond (Hon) , Andy Northrup (DG ), Kirk Grissom (Hon) and Richard Sands (Yam). With Sem ics so far in the lead the big concern for the riders was to get into one of the payoff positions, and not too many of them existed. Hammond and Northrup stayed up front for a few laps then Grissom displaced Northrup, but only for a few laps , then Northrup was back in third . James Gochmanosky (Yam ) rode a strong fourth , keeping the rapidly advancing Johnson away from the leaders. On the ninth lap Johnson was in third and working on capturing second. He did exactly that on the 11th lap. When the flagger Paul put out the checkers the leaders were "Smokin' Semics," Johnson, Hammond, Northrup and Gochmanosky. Hammond took an early le." 80 BEG: 1. Robertson tops 'at SSM M X By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA , AUG . 9 Saddleback regular Craig Robertson piloted his big bore Suzuki to a runaway Open Intermediate win at this week 's SSM race . Robertson kept his Zook on the gas and flying right from the start of each moto and clearly established a commanding lead that was never to falter. Robertson's back to back moto wins were challenged only by Yamaha riders Kelly Saulie and Larry Flint. Saulie followed Robertson to the checkers in the first moto while Flint settled for third place at the finish . Flint found a few extra ponies for the second race and pushed Robertson for part of the moto before dropping off the pace and taking the checkers in the runner-up position: Michael Hair wicked his Yamaha into third place at the finish of the second rnoto with Saulie holding onto fourth . Flint picked up second overall honors behind Robertson with . Saulie finishing th ird and Hair fourth . Lynn McGraw used his big YZ to capture the top honors in the Veterans class. McGraw's Yamaha never missed a beat as he led the field to the check ers in both motos. Motocross Action editor Jody Weisel rode a test Maico 450 to a third place in the first rnoto and backed it up with a second in moto two and second place overall. Following McGraw and Weisel to the finish line was Dennis Rosenberg, riding a Honda to third overall. Results . OPEN INT : 1. Craig Robertson ISuz); 2. Larry Aint IYam): 3.
