crashed in front of him on turn one and Pe nhall had to lay his machine down to avoid the fallen rider. In doing so Czech rider Milan Spinka , who was traveling close bhind, rammed into him . Penha ll's machine was ex tensively damaged and he had to use his number two bike for his remaining rides. n Despite being carried off on a stretcher Penhall took part in the rerun and came second behind Ole Olsen. He then went on to win two more races to qualify for the Sept. 14 final. Bruce retired from his remaining rides and went to the hospital where he had several stitches and X -rays showed he had a compressed rib cage. The accident has come at a crucial time for Penhall in his bid for world title honors. with the speedway final on Sept. 5 followed nine days later by the long track final, a nd then a return to America for the National Championship. ~u America's other semi hope Steve Gresham. who was riding in the other semi in Yugoslav ia fa iled to qua lify fo r the final at Scheesel. West Germany . Qu alifers from Jubek, West Germany: Ole O lsen (20) ; Iva n Mauger (16);C . Betzl (15); B . Penhall ( 14); J. Stancl (15) ; C . Morton (14); P. Collins (12) ; M. Spinka (10 ). Qualifiers from Gornja Radgona , Yugoslavia: J. Aigner (19); W . Duden (17) ; E. Muller ( 16); G . Hack (16); A . Michanek (15) ; A. Weisbock (14); K . Maier (12) ; M. Lee (II ); Z. Kudrna (11). America's hopes of speedway honors now rest with the ability and talent of Penhall , who has changed the face of speedway here in England since his arrival three seasons ago from the small tracks of southern California. His task in the speedway world final is made a little easier with the non ·a ppearance of the World Cham pion , the legendary Iva n Ma uger and only the reserve berth for the feared Dane , O le Olsen. However , this should not take any glory away fr om th e winner of speed way's premier event as all 16 com petito rs start equa l. , As in ot her sim ila r motorcycle events. the speedwa y final can hardly say it has the best 16 riders in the wor ld with the a bsence of Ma uger , O lsen. and SCOtt Autrey, and the inclusion of Czech riders like Pet r Ondrasik and Ales Dryrnl who ca n hardly hold a regular team .berth in British League speedway. . .World Final Draw: I. Bruce Penhall (USA) ; 2. John Davis (England); 3. Perr O n draski (Czechoslovakia); 4. Hans Nielsen (Denmark); 5. Jan Andersson (Sweden); 6. Alex Dryrnl (Czechoslovakia); 7. Chris Morton (England); 8. Egon Muller (Germany) ; 9 . Dave Jessup (England); 10. Mike Lee (England) ; II . Peter Collins (Eng · land); 12. Kai Niemi (Fin la nd ); 13. Billy Sanders (Australia); 14. Finn Thomsen (Denmark); 15. Jiri Stancl (Czechoslova kia ); 16. Zenon PIech Ole Olsen (Pola nd ). Reserves: (Denmark) and Vaclav Verner (Czechoslovakia). Penhall should know his fate by race 17, his last ride when he comes up against the very fast German Egon Muller. Jiri Stanel and England's Mike Lee . In his first race he meets his "bogeyman," Denmark's Hans Nielsen . who beat Bru ce in the last heat at the Intercontinental at White City a nd also took the moruhly-contested Golden Helmet away from him . Race five sees what I think will be the crown's destiny, the race between Penhall and Swedish Champion Jan Anderssen, who will be riding on his home track at the Gothenburg Stadium. My tip for the top : Bruce Penhall first , J a n Anderssen second and Dave Jessup third . • OMALHERBE ·500cc World Champions See your local dealer or contact; Cosmopolitan Motors Hatboro, PA 19040 . 215/672·9100 There are no losers in motorcycle racing only also-rans.
