Gibson unbelievable at CMC Saddlebaek By Mike Klinger ORANGE, CA , AUG. 6 Fa ctory Honda rider Jim Gibson needed some help this past weekend at the Continental Motosports Club motocross at Saddle- 36 back Park. Gibson wanted to race thi s past weekend bu t could not find a scooter to ride , so Kelvin Franks brought out his two Franks Racing machines and Gibson 'm ade short work of the competition. Gibson had only ridden the bikes a little on Saturday, but come Sunday he was unbeatable. In mota one of the 250cc Pros, Gibson started his charge. He was first off the gate with Andy Northrup (Han) , Jim Tarantino (Han) and Bryan Maloney (Han) making up the top four. ·By lap five, Tarantino had moved ahead of Northrup , and Maloney and Val Tamietti (Mai) were in a heated battle for fourth. Back in the pack Gaylon Mosier (Kaw) and Gary Semics (LOP Yam) were cutting their way up to the leaders. Near the end of the mota, Maloney made a mad charge and overtook Northrup for third and Mosier was now in striking dist ance of fourth place. At the checkered flag, Gibson won by a wide margin, Tarantino was second, then came Maloney , Northrup, Mosier and Tamietti. .At the drop of the gate of mota two , GIbson was nowhere to be found . Northrup had grabbed the lead with Semics, Tarantino and Mosier in close quarters. Gibson , after having the carburetor choke activate a-number of ~imes going up the start, was hung up In 15th place. On lap six Kawasakimounted Mosier took Over the lead and began to pull the field. Gibson had moved up to fifth in six laps and look out! Wtih Tarantino and Northrup ~olding on to momentarily stab le posinons, Husqvarna-mounted Dave Gerig w~ s in. fourth ~nd unfortu natel y G,b~on s next VI ctim . By lap 12 , MOSIer had slowed to adjust his throttle cable, allowing Tarantino to pull right up on the Un i-Trak. On the second to last lap , Gibson had overtaken Tarantino and a misshi ft by Mosier allowed Gibson to take the lead and th e win for a 1-1 tally after being down and out. Tarantino (2-3) had the second best score ahead of Mosier (52), Northrup (4-7) and Gerig (8-4) . Gibson again made shambles of the Open Pros . Gibson rode the Franks Racing four -stroke Honda to a 2·2 score for first overall. In mota one Mosier , on the 420 Kawasaki got th~ holeshot with Gibson and Tamietti (Mai) second and th ird. Mosier went on to win fairly handily but Gibson not having ridden the "Franks Four': extensively, had some trouble. Ga ry S~mics (LO P) made his move on lap eight for second , and took that position but fell lame for a couple of minutes with mechanical problems then re~ained his power. CMC's Open class points leader, Val Tamietti (Mai), ran a strong third behind Gibson and ahead of Semics. Semics won mota two of the Open Pros but not until the front runners had a personality clash. Mosier had been leading again and in the middle of the mota, the Kawasaki slipped-out of its line and Gibson was right there to plow into Mosier. Semics took the lead , Gibson was momentarily detained and Mosier decided not to complete the mota. Gibson's 2·2 score was good enough for the overall with Semics placing second with a tally of 4-1. Tamietti (3-3) was third. In the 125cc Pro class Tibbs McCullough (Yam) won both motos but not until he battled with Mike . Beier (Ya m) hand and foot. Beier got second overall with a ·2-2 point total , and Richard Hume (Yam) was th ird. Results MINI J R: 1. T. Unenam (Yaml; 2. B. B..... IKaw). MINIINT: 1. J . McManus lSUll. Tri-Valley Suzuki Dealer's Summer Night Motocross Series Friday. As usual , a drawing was held for a Suzuki Dealer's gift certificate, as well as trophies and gift certificates to class winners, with qualifying fo r the d rawing a t the end of the series for the Suzuki RM 80 and a Marantz stereo system . In the Pee Wee class , Jimmy Chamberlin grabbed the holeshot , but went down in the first tum and Ronnie Densford took over with Bradley George and Tony Sulek behind. George quickly passed Densford and that started the two -way battle. Densford pressured heavily the first half of the mota , but George was not intimidated by the overpowering Italjet. But it finally took its toll on the little six-year-old Suzuki pilot, and George slid out just after the halfway mark. That left Densford way out in front, and Sulek abo rode into second while George got going again in third, ahead of Chamberlin. Four laps from the finish Densford's bike stalled on him in a tight hairpin, lett ing Sulek and George by. Sulek had a good margin over George and held on to win , but Geo rge and Densford ran their race right to the wire. In the last straight, Densford po wered right on by to take second by a wheel. Moto two was all Densford's as he' took the holeshot and pulled a wire -towire win . George got off dead last , but in the first tum roosted past Chamberlin and Sulek for second. He rode this position 'for five laps, trying to reel in Densford. But George bogged his mount, and it took him too long to get the momentum back up, which gave Chamberlin an excellent run into second. Sulek abo passed, but George got by Sulek quickly, and closed the g a p instantly on Cham be rlin . Trying to pass Chamberlin on the inside of the sweeper in fr ont of the start line, George went down again, right in the same spot . tha t claimed him in his first moto. T his ga ve Chamberlin an easy run in for second wit h only a couple laps remaining, and Sulek went on to take third with George fourth. In Junior Cycles, Kyle Lewis conti n ued his undefeated string of mota victories and overalls wit h a 1-1 ride. Danny Lam b put together a twomoto sweep of the Junior Cycle Stock Novices, while right behind him Bubba Ericksen out-rode Kris Vensel for second place h6nors. Toby Lawes took a two-m ota ~ctory in the 83cc Stock Novices to defeat newc omer Mike . Hammond and Troy Welty, while in the Beginners, Jim Callier grabbed the 12 and over portion, with the 9-ll overall going to Chris Cole, just ahead of David Chambers. Resu lts PEE WEE: 1.
