TEN YEARS AGO Two weeks ago Kenny Roberts moved the all -time Grand Na tional win record up to l!9 with his Laguna Seca victory. Ten years ago . Ban Markel used a Harley-Davidson Sprint to win the short track National in Hinsdale, IL. thus tying Joe Leonard's record of l!7 National wins. Jim Rice and Neil Keen finished l!·ll. Rice came back a day and a half later to win the Peoria TT National. and came out of th e weekend with a 60 point lead in the standings over Dicit Mann, who DNF the National. Peoria was Rice's sixth National win of the year. BSA teammate Dave Aldana finished second at Peoria, Triumph's Gene Romero recorded a third. Evil Knievel announced the target date for his jump of the Snake River April 1. 1971. Road racer An Baumann was listed in serious condition in a nonhero California hospital following a crash at a road race in Vacaville. A desert racers vs. mot~crosscrs challenge at Indian Dunes went to the closed course guys as MXer John Rice led the way across the line, followed by desert rider Whitey Martino, MX man Bill Clements and legendary desert ace J.N. Roberts. Roberts led pan of the way. only to have his engine lose fire in a water crossing. Seven hundred riders showed at th e Annual Salinas Elks/Salinas Ramblers M.C .·sponsored scrambles, Riclt Otto won the fea ture event on a 650 Triumph. Ruben Benites and Larry Shaw were the winners of the Handicap and Scratch Mains , respectively. as speed way racing continued at Costa Mesa. - J erry Singer defeated Billy Gray in the Second Division Main, while Jeff Ward emerged as the minibike race Winner . besting Dave Carbon, Gene WoodiandJayColl:. The Bureau of Land Management released a brochure entitled "Opera tion ORVAC - Recommendations and Guidelines for the Mana~ement of Off- Road Vehicles on Public Domain Lands in California." Up in nonhero California. Carl CraDle continued blasting the motorcross opposition. winning all three Senior classes at Hangtown Speedway. Lloyd Houchins breezed to an easy win over Eddie Mulder in a half mile at Ca listoga . CA. Cris Balle and Steve Wibon were the Amateur and Novice winners . San Bernardino County proposed an ordinance that would require mufflers on all motor vehicles operated in the county - no exceptions were listed . POWERJET Rich Arnalz wins the Novice event at Laguna Seca, Kevin Brunson finishes third. Both Yamaha mounted and Lectron Powerjet equipped. A motocross race in Zillah. WA, saw a fierce duel in the Open class between Jim Pomeroy and Norm Kopp. It was close, bu t Pomeroy won all three mo tes , . ~ -- 31
