It was like an invasion. One thousand motocross
riders and their families traveled from 46 states
to Ponca City to compete in the National Motorsport Association's once-a-year national
championships. This year's event,
sponsored by Yamaha and a host
of other companies featured five

days - nearly 50 OUTS - of

back to ba ck motocross racing in a city
that has probably by now earned the
reputation as the friendliest town in
. the country. at least to motocrossers.
It was Just t~ree ye.ars ago that . the
NMA brought ItS national championships to this n~>nhern Ok!ahoma town
of 30 .000. This year enrnes swelled to
1.400 ~ all in search o.f a national
NMA title. When th e raclnl!' ended on

national NMA titles in the 83cc Stock
Expert. 83cc Modified Expert. and
105cc. 12-year and over classes .
Amid a blistering heat wave the
popular event got underway with a
day-long practice on Wednesday and
continued the next day as 32 of the 61
classes ran their first motos, The
climax came Sunday when the final 19
runoff rnotos were staged - the third
motes for riders who had qualified in
their division contests earlier.
Holland's performances dominated
the week of racing but there were
other stars , Scott Brown (Suz) of Santa
Anra , CA . brought home three
national titles . one each in 105cc 9. II ,
Junior Cycle Modifed Intermediate.
and Junior Cycle Stock Intermediate
9-11 classes . Cody Marek (Yam) of
Rosenburg. TX . took home national
crowns in the Junior Cycle .Stock and
Modified 6-8 classes . Lowell Thomson
of Past Falls . ID . rode a pair of Yarna has to titles in the 83cc Modified
Novice 9ยท11 and Junior Cycle Modified
9.11 classes . Floyd Robbins (Yam)
captured NMA titles in the 105c c
Stock and Modified Intermediate classes. The San Juan . TX. rider finished
first in all four motos he entered.
Yamaha -mounted Scooter Stafford
of Baton Rouge. LA. captured the win
in the 125cc Stock Expert class with
three second place finishes. Stafford
had a crowd pleasing battle with Milford . OH's Randy Bryant (Yam) in the
runoff. The duo stayed -a split second
. apart from the start of the moto with
Bryant crossing the finish line jsut
ahead of Stafford. Bryant took second
place overall in the class.
