"Fast Fred" Traskowsky took the overall ahead of Ungerer and Reidy. . There were three 250cc Juniors, all mounted on Kawasakis but the winner's, Kevin Kirkland's, wasn't a Uni-Trak. Nonetheless , he jumped to early leads in both motos and despite pressures from Jeff Harshman, who held the lead briefly in moto one, won both motos handily . In moto two, the most int eresting racing was between Harshman and Kurt Ross". Ross came up to challenge for the second position and after two laps of car -and-mouse, got around Harshman to claim second overall be hind Kirkland. . Mark Stevens of Salina doesn't mess around when he crawls on the big 420 Uni- Trak, and proceeded to roost all over the rest of the Open Juniors, claiming a pair of holeshots and wins. Batt1ing for second was Jerry " Un cle Leonard" Jones and Bill Hinkle. The two ride a t a nearly identical pace and were never more than a few bike lengths apart the whole first rnoto. Jones held onto second for the first moto and was running second again in the second moto with Hinkle right after him. Then Jones threw it away in a " poo r' berm and Hinkle rolled in for second overall . Results MINI JR : 1. Many Kerns !Yaml; 2. Kurt Strand (Suzl; 3. [)av;d Exkslrom ISuzl. MINI SR: 1. POWDER PUFF 1. Deb Jones ISUll. : Larive ends season undefeated By Richard Creed STURGIS, SD ,JULY 19 It wasn't the usual runaway win for Sturgis' Mark Larive in the Open IT class Saturday night in the final round of the Wes tern South Dakota Championship race series. But it was a win . . Challenging Larive al l the way was Ra pid Citian, Bill Stork. Stork recently won two state motocross championships and he put all his cornering skills to work in the tight turns of the J.C. Hoel track. Bu t Larive's thumping power saved him on the straights. If the race had been longer, things might have been different . Stork was aboard a lightweight 250cc Yamaha monoshock two-stroker while Larive pounded the turf with a much heavier 500cc four-stroke sin gle. While Stork's machine was designed for the rough and tumble world of motocross racing, Larives bike is little more than a superb play bike. ~ During the race, Stork would lose ground to Larive coming out of the infield's twisty bits as Larive thundered away. But Larive had to hang tight to kee p Stork fro m getting by him . Sto rk would dive into the infield attempting to cut under Larive as Mark struggled with the heavier bike , then Larive would block Stork with the sheer bulk of the bigger bike. Stork made several attempts at passing Larive on the jump ramp, but Larive held on and stayed just enough ahead to hold the lead going into the final two turns of the infield course. It was an ed ge that made the difference. Stork didn't go home empty handed , however. Besid es taking . second to Larive in the O pen TT he garnered the win in the 250 TT race, beating the Conrad boys, Rex and Darren, in the process. Rex had a pretty fair evening, taking second and third-place trophies in the short .track races in addition to his second in the 250TT. O ther Sturgis riders posting good showings, in a ddition to L a rive who also won the 125cc Ex pen short track race, were Pat Schieffer, Co rey Brink, Doug Du a ne and Matt Bu rg e. • TERRY VANCE - VANCE & HINES RACING 8.791 Second E.T. and 151.26 M.P.H.
