a short straightaway and pulled into
the lead, bu t the determined Lund re passed in a short uphill section. Smit h
aga in was battling with Bryant for
third. But the close ra cing came to an
end when both Claassen and Bryant
wen t down in separate m ishaps
putting Lund and Smith in solid first
and second places. Bryant was able
to finished in third with Claasen fourth .
FIVe 250cc Pros along with two Open
Pros lined . up ready to terrorize th e
Sixes track and as the gate dropped ,
Open rider Dave Creech pulled int o
the lead. Creech's lead was short-lived
as he 'stalled his big Yamaha , this
leaving the door open for Chris Alberts .
Chris came to the Sixes track in high
style, arriving in Rex Staten's cube
van. Chris and Rex Staten's mechanic,
Tom Volin , are roommates from Coos
Bay and Tom was home on a short
vacation.
Alberts continued to lead with David
Reimer in second and Tom Stillion in
third. Reimer put the pressure on
Alberts for several laps and at one
point tried to pass , but in the process
he stalled his Honda letting Stillion by
for second.
Stillion then took over wh ere
Reimer left off and he and Alberts
were soon lapping riders. This reall y
got Alberts yelling as he tried to make
the slower riders move over . Alberts
was able to make a clean pass bu t Stillion was detained for just a second
which is all Alberts needed to get to
the checkered flag in first . Stillion
came in second with Reimer in third .
First Open rider was Fred Lamberson.
In the second mo to , Alberts was first
out of the hole and again was first to .
me finish. Reimer came in second after
Still ion vacated that spot due to a very
sick sounding Yamaha. In third was
Eureka rider Doug Frisbee on his Honda. Fred Lamberson again held off
Creech for first Open rider,"
The Oregon Oldtimers Association
members were in full force at the invitation of Sixes Motocross Chairman
and Oldtimer member Elmer Reimer.
In the first moto, Elmer held off
Portland Oldtimer Bill Naylor who
was piloting his "Kit Kat Club of
Reno" special. Naylor was unable to
catch Elmer after attempts to slow
Elmer with bribes of cold Leer du ring
the race failed.
After the first moto, Naylor was
seen sleep ing in his lawn cha ir soaking
up the sun while Elmer was busy running back and forth wate ring the track
and handling complaints . This was
obvious ly a Naylor plot, to rest up
while Elmer exhausted himself.
The second moto rolled arou nd and .
Na ylor had one foot on his starting
block, a fou r-inch high block of wood
used by non -tall people so they can sit
on the ir tall Yamahas on the start ing
line. EImer was also on the line, al though looking a bit tired. Hayden
Waddington was on the line on his
Maicadi, a 1964 Ducati 250cc engine
in a Maico frame.
When the gate d ropped, Elmer
leaped his Suzuki into the lead with
Naylor close behind. But as in the first
moto , hard work and ' clea n living
prevailed as Elmer again led to the
checkered flag . Bill Na ylor came in
second and 64·year.old Waddington
came in in sixth.
