In., Ailltueao is a sp8Cl81 nykln rB stJOnO yet \MIf stretch and not cut the Uther. Wayne Rainey (60) won the Peoria Trophy Dash over Jeff Haney. fiis Chuck's H. D.sponsored XR, marched right to the front on the second lap and went on to win from Ricky Graham after a slower rider blocked Graham's line on an attempted pass after the jump. Tuner Tex Peel had spent the bulk of practice repair. ing the Klotz -Wiseco H -D after Graham was downed by another rider in practice. Triumph-mounted Gary Scott edged the Shell Racing Yamaha of Ted Boody for th ird. The final heat saw Ronnie Jones, aboard a Lillie Racing/Megac ycl e / Knight Frames Yamaha TT500, hold . f a nine-lap challenge by Harley's Randy Goss . Jones had half a bik elength at the flag after a last chance slingshot/ draft mov e by Goss fell short. Buddy Robinson , rid ing a Harley sponsored by Budweiser/Custom Equipment/ND, took a closing third . I Semis In order to fill the four remaining slots in the 16-rider field, two ea ch would advance from th e semis. The first semi was all Steve Morehead with Mike Gilkey and his Sport City Honda/ Junior Wells·sponsored Honda coming clOse at the finish . Morehead was aboard a Ra y Beck Harley. Scott Drake was rolling to the win in semi two when th e ignition began to cu t out. That left T ed Boody to romp nome with Brad Hurst and his Messler Perfonnance/KRW/ Pa nt her Frames Triumph following. Trophy Race By the time the Trophy Race rolled round th e track had begun to dry, raising th e hopes of most 500cc riders. Wayne Rainey , aboard the Chris Armstrong-tuned H&H Workshop Harley , ended th ose hopes. " I' m glad I won ," sa id Rainey, "b u t I wish I had made the National. I tried , but my Santa Fe magic on the last lap of my semi d idn 't work ." Honda 's Jeff Haney tried his hardest to unseat Rainey and closed to his rear wheel numerous times over th e jump. Hehad to settle for a close second . N ational ",T ire choice, the heat , and how to last 25 grueling laps on th e serpe nt ine, body-pounding half mile plus track were the topics of discuss ion in the pits before the National. A fals e start was called on the first try to get the National underway, but that didn't bother Pear- son . When the light turned green for good , he was gone. Eklund came off the line well , but got caught in traffic and emerged behind Parker, Jones, Kidd and Fay . By lap four he was up to third and then through to second before th e end of th e la p.. Parker, Jones , Kidd , Fay, Goss , Graham and Gary Scott debated third in freight tr ai n fashion with Boody and Hank Scott close behind. Buddy Robinson made his way to the pits with ign it ion problems. Eklund continued to close on Pearson until he suddenly slowed after th e jump and coasted around to the pits on lap 10. "T he clutch hub nut backed off," sa id Eklund with a less th a n happy look on his face. The demise of Eklund left Pea rson with a six-second gap on second place Parker who was beginning to feel some pressure from the Goss/Fay b attle go ing on behind him . Three laps later Fay managed to dump both Parker and Goss for second , but th at lasted only two laps before Parker was ba ck out front. Meanwhile , it was tooth and na il with Graham , Jones, Gary Scott, Kidd and Hank Scott dicing for fifth . Pearson , getting signals from R ick Hocking, was opening up a larger gap on second , barely slowing down although signaled to do so. On lap 16 Goss took over second from Parker while Fa y dropped back to fou rt h and Graham moved int o fifth . The top five fin ishers were set. Graham tried h is bes t to run down Fa y's Honda, but came up short. Pearson· jazzed the fans along the front straight fence when he pulled up the front wheel in tum four and held it in the air all the way to the checkered flag . "Sometimes you ha ve to wait a lon g time to win that first National, " sai d Pearson. " I have and it's worth it, • especially to win it here." Results NATIONAL: 1. Scott Pearson (Yaml; 2.
