o 00 0') Bill Lingley heads the pack in Cal Expo's Handicap Main. Ferris and Yarrow take Cal Expo honors By Jann Houston SACRAMENTO , CA ,JULY 25 As the starting gate went up in the first Handicap Heat tonight the temperature was still 105 0 , down from the high of 108 0 • It 18 was hot and if the fans in the stands, sipping their favorite ice cold beverages, thought it was hot , you can imagine how the riders felt in their helmets and leathersl However, as always , the show went on in the true spirit of speedway as former speedwaystar-turned-announcer Mike Rooney did his usual outstanding job of . keeping everyone so wrapped up in the show , little else mattered. In the Scratch Main , it was " Do it" Duane Yarrow in the lead off th e pol e with " Incred ible" Eddie Ingels in close pursuit and Ifi-year-old Steve Lucero riding third . Ingels' bike lost power on lap two in turn four , one of many mechanical problems which plagued the even ing, undoubtedly due to the weather conditions . Lucero became the threat behind Yarrow who was still in the lead. Faria met the track , going down in turn one on "lap four, and the checkered flag was out for the two remaining riders, Yarrow winning and Lucero second. In the Scratch Consolation, Mike Delacy, who won his first Handicap Main at Napa last Saturday, took the lead on lap two in turn four and held on to win after Dave Faria became another victim of mechanical poop out. Paul Orlandi was second, Torn Ferris third. The Handicap Main was different than most in that Mike Faria was missing after failing to make the transfer in his heat. Bill Lingley, who moved into Division' One just two weeks ago, j umped out in front and showed his ability holding the lead until lap four, tum two when "Fantastic" Tom Ferris took advantage of a wide turn by Lingley, taking the lead as his cheering fan club went wild jumping and cheering him to the checkered flag and his first Handicap Main win of the season, Lingley stayed right in there taking second and holding off "Incredible" Eddie. Marc Prince won the Handicap Consolation, taking the lead from Joe Leduc on lap three , successfully preventing the ever- threatening Paul Orlandi from moving into the lead. The Division Two Main finally happened after two rolling restarts: Pat Linn won , Steve Vieira was second, Mark Dragony third. In Division Three , Dan Sweeton moved into the lead smooth and fast , enjoying a comfortable lead until he ate the wall in turn three on lap three. Jack Forseth took the lead and his first win with only three weeks of spe edway experience. Last week's Main winner, Jim Thrasher from Reno , took second, Jerry Laney third. Another of several Reno racers , 13year-old Wes Montgomery , went back to "The Biggest Little City in the World" with his first Junior Main trophy . Scott Brain, also of Reno, took second and Bart Bast third . Northern Californians are anxiously awaiting the third round of the U.S. . Qualifier, to be held at Cal Expo on August 9. King, Schaeffer pass crash course By Bill R. Locey VENTURA ,CA,JULY 29 A smaller-than-usual crowd turned out on a warmer-thanusual night for some strangerthan-fiction racing on the onefifth -mile Ventura oval. They could've sold tic kets to an air show what with the number of bodies flying through the air and bouncing off walls. A treacherous bump in turn two was no help, serving as a launching pad for a number of the 29 crashes. Another weekend horseshow again made life difficult for track maintenance. But apart from the usual bumps and bruises, there were no serious injuries. Craig Schaeffer, who hasn't been here in a few months, was glad he came as he took the Handicap Main and 17year -old Lance King took the Scratch . In the Handicaps , it was the Schaeffer-Derek Gage match in three different races which proved to be the decider. In the first encounter, after two laps of bump and run, Schaeffer off the 20 managed to get past Gage Dubb Ferrell w orks the San Bernardino high groove ah ead of Dave Sim s. off the 10 and held on for the win . Keith Chrisco, Mike Muntean and Jeff Tomlin were the other heat winners. In the fourth race, speedway great Mike Curoso in only his second week back slammed into Dave Miller, finally managed to hobble off the track and came back to ride well. In the Semi, Schaeffer and Gage battled the entire race, but Gage wouldn't let him by and held on for the win. In the Main, Schaeffer got by . Gage when it counted on the second lap and turned the Main into a yawner. "\11 three races might as well have been match races as the other four riders had absolutely no effect on the outcomes. Winning all three of his Scratch rides. Lance King returned with style after a disappointing trip to England where license troubles kept him sidelined. Steve "Psycho" Columbo made his seasonal debut here with three seconds. Recently returned from England where his team folded, and having little future as a travel agent, Columbo remembers "lousy weather, rotten weather and ugly girls." As it is intended to be, the Scratch Main was the best race of the night. Nobody got the gate as it was four riders shoulder to shoulder into the first turn. Then Columbo jumped into the lead on the inside with Alan Christian inches behind. The elbowto-elbow battle lasted for a lap when King came from way back in a radical, off balance move on the outside, passed them both and won easily. Chris Hedge from Marina Del Ray, in his second appearance here, won his second trophy . Last week it was the Third Division honors, while this week off the zero , he won his heat and the Main for the Second Division title. Craig DePhillippi. a two -month speedway veteran, won his heat and the Main in the crash-filled Third Division program. The local riders should've stayed home and watched Network . Bobby McLain and Pat Smith failed to transfer. Dave Smith, Bobby Hill and Henry Swain crashed, and Mike Coniglio managed a fourth in the 0·3 Main. Next week's racing under a full moon promises to be the best of the year as Ventura Raceway hostsround one of th e National Qualifiers. The 32 top riders in an all Scratch program will be going all out for points and the 14 available spots in the Nationals to be held ' October I I at Costa Mesa. The Babe Ruth of Speedway, Mike Bast , will be going for his sixth title in a row . That is, of course, if the rumor that he's going to retire proves to be o untrue.. . -I Results - 7 SCRATCH MAIN : 1. Lance King; 2. Steve Columbo; l 3. Alan Christian ; 4. Keith Chrisco. On the start, Curoso, who started on the pole, and southern California's top point man~ Alan "Crazy" Christian moved out~ front. Things went fine until turn two l when Curoso and Christian went down causing a red flag and a subsequen t restart. - Both riders were able to returri' (Christian had to go to the pi ts to get his back -up bike) for a second try . Overanxious Gene Woods did ] everything but break the tapes twice while anticipating the restart and finally did break the bottom tape as the starting gate went up. For Woods,'" it was back to the pits and an· automatic fourth place finish. On the second restart it was againq Curoso out of the gate first arid into,) the lead ahead of Dave Sims and ( Christian.
