Hot racing at Race Place MX By Mitch Rorabaugh CHAPMAN , KS,JULY 13 Nearly intolerable heat might have had a n adverse effect on rider and spectator turnout, bu t the action in each of the classes at R ace Place 11 near Chapman provided plenty of excitement. Kansas City ace Brad Jones made the trek to Race Place and gave a couple of loca l riders a very fast moving target to shoot for. Jones took the ho leshot in the first 250cc Expert rno to with Fred Traskowsky, Kevin Carbaugh, Tony Billa n and Glen McC lu re in tow. Traskowsky was the only rider able to stay near the fleet Jones and on the third lap managed to slip by. Jones played shadow for a little more than a lap before setting up Traskowsky on an uphill jump to power his Yamaha past. Jones went on to win the moto with Traskowsky rolling in a secure second over Carbaugh and Billan. Jones put everyone back at the start of th e second moto and cruised in uncont ested for the win and the overall. Traskowsky once again maintained the runnerup slot throughout the moto , despite being stopped at one point by a piece of tree root tha t somehow wedged itself in the drive chain. Billan brought his Honda in for third and third overall. Carbaugh had difficulty keeping his Honda running straight in the clods and dropped to sixth for fourth overall. . Bruce Staples of Manhattan led the charge of Open Experts through the first turn . Hot after Staples was Jones on his Yamaha 465 followed by H.A . Spaudling, Jr. Staples kept his Suzuki ahead of Jones until the third la p when he managed to squeeze by. Stap les stayed close behind and waited for Jones to make some sort of mis take. On the fift h la p that mistake came in the form of' a crash on J ones' part in the bottom of one of the steep gullies. Staples went on to win before Jones could recover. Jones led Mike Crurnet , who failed to start the first rnoto , Spaudling and Staples in moto number two . . Spaudling pulled off the track briefly on the firs t lap whi le Jones and Cru met pu lled further ahead of Staples. Jones started to . put a little distance on Crurner's Maico by t he fourth la p , but then lost control in the whoops a nd very ne arly fell . somehow m a naging to hang on to win it over Crumet and Staples. At the start of the l25cc Experts, it was Mark Newlin's Yamaha leading Jon Ungerer, Don Sleezer, Roger Frizell and Craig Robl. Ungerer ran off th e track in the bottom of a gully midway through the first lap and lost hi s second palce as Sleezer inherited it and took off for Newl in . By the third lap , th e top five were running very tight and wheel to wheel as it was Newlin , Sleezer, Frizell, Mark Williams and Kurt Johnston. Sleezer put his Suzuki into the lead on the fourth lap whi le Johnston moved up to fourth when Williams ran into difficulty and dropped to seventh. At the flag , it was Sleezer winning over Newlin , Frizell a nd J ohnston . Marty Crowley ho leshot the second rnoro with Frizell right on his tail. Before the lap was half over Fri ze ll slipped wide in a turn and Sleezer dove into second. Sleezer really started pres· suri ng Crowley and on the second lap made his move and got by, as did Frizell a few turns later. Newlin and Johnston got around Crowley as well on the next lap and then Johnston went right past Newlin . On the fifth lap Johnston took an inside line by Frizell's Honda and went on to finish second behind Sleezer , who was several seconds ahead. Frizell hung on for third over Newlin and Crowley. John Fekas snared the start of the 125cc Ju niors with John Gillia rd, Danny Flynn, Tim Reif and Kurt Ross trai ling. One-half lap later , Gilliard slipped insid e of Fekas when Fekas got sideways on an off-camber, Flynn moved into second at the end of the first lap and then Fekas pulled out of the race with a badly bent brake pedal. By the thi rd lap the order was Gillia rd , Flynn , Ross, Reif and Roy J oh nson , J r. Flyn n was un a ble to reel Gillia rd in a nd the order remained the same to the end. Flyn n led the second charge of the class. He pulled out a slight lead for two laps before Gilliard snicked his Hond a into overd rive and went by for the win. Flynn kept him in sight a nd finished second over Ross and Reif. Lyle Reidy was the ma n to beat in the 250cc J uniors. Reid y a n d his Yamaha turned two holeshots into two wins with his smooth and controlled style , a necessity with the heat and , despite a fine watering effort. even tually dust. Steve Szynaka was ru nni ng a . secure second until the third la p when he went dow n in some mud in the first mo to . Jeff Montgomery too k over the seco nd position and Cu rt is Everleigh and Lloyd McCl u re finished . third and fourth .
