Wargo, Kehoe dominate AMA Southwest qualifier By Bob Keyes Photos by Ed Mores TUCSON , AZ, JULY 19 There never seem ed to be a dull moment at Sagu aro Raceway for the AMA a rea nine qualifier. If it wasn't the thunderstorms M ike Looper finished third in the 125cc qual ifier class at Saguaro. . Peterson bounces backatCMC AscotMX By Tom Corley GARDENA , CA .JULY 16 After missing a few weeks of racing action , Todd Peterson from Orange came back to Ascot and didn't lose his touch for winning 4 the Pro classes. He took his two class quota once again and this included the 125 and 250cc Pro wins . The 250cc Pro race was one of the best of the night. How Todd is able 10 win each time is unbelievable, especially after another rider gets an early lead . Danny Westergaard is the best at the start of the race. Dan shot out front in both motos but couldn't hold off Peterson who somehow always manages to work his way on by. In the first moto, Westergaard got the holeshot and held the lead for some time. Todd made his move in a sweeper and smoothed on by for first . . Da nny was seco nd while Scott Johnson followed the two Yamahas on his Honda. Norman Nilsson wasn't in the lineup because he broke his left hand fooling about on a bicycle. In the second moto, Westergaard got the early lead again and he should have gone all the way . Bu t then he dropped his bike in a comer and this allowed Pete Murray and Peterson to go on by. Dan ny was out of luck from there on out. Todd soon was in first ahead of Murray and Boo Stichter. Peterson got a good break in the second m oto and about the only negative thi ng that ha p pe ned was the fact that he knocked over a trash can on one corner and this cut his hand . Peterson walked away with the overall 250cc Pro bucks ahead of Murray , Gary Jones, Val Tamietti from Track 'N Travel and Stichter. The 250cc Intermediate race was just filled with excitement. DeVon Farley controlled the first moto ahead of Randy Sciarra and Doug Davenport. Ron Olson wou ld have won a top posi tion. but he bailed off his Honda in the first mote. O lson rolled from the top level of the track to the lower level as he approached the second corner. Sciarra clinched the second moto win and Farley was out with a bent lever. Gary Sewell was second on his Ammex ahead of Tim Hammer. Scott Graham was another rider who went off of the upper level ern bankment just like Olson did. Scott was shot down in the first moto be cause of that. Graham was in the 125cc Intermediate race and Craig Westergaard earned the first moto win ahead of Mark Harpwood and Donnie Luce. Luce improved in the final moro and took first and was follow ed by Randy Sciarra who was the 250cc Inter mediate winner. Mark Allen was third in that final moto. Overall it was Luce , Sciarra , Mark Harpwood and Allen. There were five Mini classes and by far the 'biggest turnout was in the Junior division. In the first division . Dan Carpenter went for two wins on his Suzuki. Dan had to battle with Terry Woody for the lead , b ut overcame him. Woody had a 3·2 score which put him in front of Dave Perry who usually races a t OCIR. Jeff Bar bacovi has had his share of problems lately and has either fallen or had a pipe leak. All was well tonight, though. and Jeff was second in the first moto and did finish fourth overall in front of Edward Gauley. Results 50 JR : 1. Gary Morton 1Sw1; 2. Richy Thorwaldson (Sw); 3. The leaders battled back and fonh so much in every race that it was hard to tell who was out front . That is except for Bryan Wargo of Antioch, CA who grabbed first overall in both the 125 and 250cc Expert classes. Bu t then, he had to pick betwee n qualifying in 0I1e or the other, accord ing to AMA rules. He picked to go on to the other leg of the area nine qualifier in Porterville . CA August 10 on his 125cc Yamaha. backed by Pacific Racing Enterprises. It only seems appropriate for him to pick the 125cc win because it was definitely the most exciting race that Tucson has had in a long time - with the lead bouncing back and forth between the California riders and local factions more times than the crowd could stand. In the first ) 25cc Expert moto Tucsonian Buddy Thomison pulled a spectacu lar hol esho t with Roger Hensley second a nd Mike Looper th ird . Wargo was cut off in the hol eshot and was back in sixth. The only real change in the first four laps was Tibbs McCullough who worked his wa y up to fourth from an eighth place start. T h en Hensley was attempting to pass Thomison going up Sunshine Hill and got cut off, sending Hensley into an endo into the side of the hill . When th e dust cleared, Thomison remained ou t front while Looper emerged second, Mike Beier third and McCullough fourth. All four leaders were within one second of each other now as Hensley feell back to eighth place. Looper then began to put the pressure on Thomison , ·trying to pass him several times. Then he did when they were coming ou t of the valley , but only held on to the lead till the top of Sunshine Hill. After that , it seemed as though Looper might be having some problems as he fell back four places, leaving Thomison out front , then Beier, McCu llough, Wargo and Looper . Wargo.seemed to be making his play on McCullough when all of a sudden Thomison crashed in the berm on to p of Sunshine Hill . ta king Be ie r , McCullough and even Looper down with him . It was then that Wargo emerged - flying right around the pile-up and into a substantial lead that he ended up stretching int o a formid abl e 20 second lead . After the pile-up , Beier came up in second place. followed closely by Looper . McCullough . H ensl ey a nd Thomison. So as Wargo pulled out further and further ahead, Looper, McCullough and Hensley all passed u Beier, one after another . Then McCullough and Hensley both passed L' d h havi ooper as It see me e was avmg problems, at the at time - there were two laps to go. 1 In the last half of the last la p after Wargo got the checkered flag. Erik Kehoe passed both Looper and then Hensley just one turn before the finish . Tibbs McCullough got second with Kehoe third and Hensley fourth . In the second moto , McCullough took the holeshot and built a good early lead . Looper got second and Kehoe third . Wargo was back in sixth. McCullough held the lead for three laps whi le Kehoe blasted past Looper into second going up Sunshine Hi ll. Then McCu llough went dow n moments later whe n he attempted to pass a lapped rider. Kehoe pulled into the lead while Wargo passed Looper putting him in second right behind Kehoe. McCullough recovered quickly and was in fourth . Kehoe then began to pull away quickly from Wargo, building a 10 second lead . McCullough clashed with another rider going off the jump at the bottom of Sunshine Hill and did not continue. having hurt his leg. So , Kehoe was still out front with Wargo sec on d, a nd Lo oper third. T he three of them finished in the same order a few laps later. O verall . in I25cc Expert Wargo got first. Kehoe second, Loo per third, Hensley fourth. Be ie r fifth , and McCullough sixth. In the first moto of the 250cc Expert qualifier, Wargo pulled an impressive holes hot with R ick Nagle, John Beaver and Jerry Hensley right behind him. Wargo stretched out a 15 second lead almost immediately and he was never even challenged again for the entire 30 minute moto. In the meantime, Rick Nagle and James Coffey were the only other riders tha t kept pace wit h Wargo after the firs t lap . It was n't long before Co ffey b lasted by Nagle and opened a wide margin between the two . At the finish , it was Wargo first by 25 seconds over Coffey in second who had a 45 second lead over Nagle . In th e second moto John Bea ver made another strong start with the holeshot only 10 have a barrage of riders blow by him moments later. Wargo led the pack 10 seconds after the start and again never had any challengers, taking both motos but eventually disqualifying himself in the 250cc class altogehter - to go on to the nex t qualifier on his 125. Behind Wargo after the first lap were Hensley. Coffey , Wayne Archer and Rick Nagle. Hensley, Coffey and Archer finished in that same order as Nagle dropped out of the second rnoto with problems. So overall , with Wargo not included. Coffey grabbed the first place trophy with Hensley second and Archer third . In the Open Expert qualifier, Arizona riders made their best showing. grabbing the three to p sp ots. T he firs t moto 'saw T ucson's Steve Ga rri son power for the ho leshot wit h Mike Ga rrett b rea thing down his neck in second. T he two went ahead to win in that order as most of the other corn petition broke down. The second rnoto was a repea t of the first for Garrison as he blew the rest of the field away. Ken Schlosser grabbed second with Garrett third. The second rnoto results were the same as the overa ll scores . •
