I a tt ended the first 125/500cc Nationa l Motocross in the Northwest at W ashougal, Washington . Many thanks for a job well d one to Action O z and his associates for bringing quality racing u p to the great Northwest. For those of you who have no t see n the W ashouga l mot oc ross track. you haven 't seen a bett er race tra ck , either for racers or spectators . Wi th our loca l boys, Chuck Sun a nd Rick Bu rgett com peti ng on home ground against the other ra cers a rou nd the States , it was spectator's heaven . With the great ri di ng are as, fantastic rac e tracks and fin e promoters such as Oz . I am incline d to say th at we in the Northwest. "don't give a damn how they do it in Ca lifornia ." ED BOWERS Mt. Sco tt M .C . Bea verton , OR Memory lane I would like to know where you get your information for the T en Years Ago article every week in your magazine. This issue you're reading now will be th e basisfor a July . 1990 Ten Years Ago piece ... Editor. TIred of it I am thoroug hly sick and tired of the gross apathy being shown by about 95 % of the bikers in SoC a l. It wou ld be bad enough if it just meant that someone else was having to do a ll of the wor k . But it is worse . Your apathy (failu re to a ttend meetings , fai lure to write letters. failure to stand up and demand you r rights) is giving t he BLM . the "go· ahead" to steal our public lands . Sin ce th e close of the public comment period (May 15, 1980 ) the amount of ORV-user interest and action has steadily decreased. even though the Bu reau has perpetrated several gross injustices. Du ring the same period. we have noted a steady increase in the restrictive nature of plan elements and proposals. The message is clear. As long as the Burea u believes that we have lost our will to resist . that we lack the guts to stand up a nd demand our rights , that it will be easier and safer to rule against us , and that we are u na ble to mount an effective campaign against their ac tions; the Bu reau will continue to make the fina l plan more and more restrictive. The final pla n will co ntain virtually not hing for you - no open areas , no access, no freedom - unless you de monst rate to the Burea u that you will not to lerate this sit ua tio n . It is u p to you : Sit on your ass (and lose the desert) or fight. Decid e now. RI C K GOCHNAUR ."Thumper Freak" 213 /862 ·3975 P.S . : CORVA Southern Regi onal Di· rector Chuck Hollingsworth (805 / 646· 6515 ) needs 50 people to work on "desert defense." (Are you go ing to call him or are your going to sit at home and tell everyone how hard you worked five yea rs ago?) Supercross, no circus After reading Rex Resse's int erview with promoter Mike Goodwin , and at tending both days of the Superbowl of Motocross , I decided to express m y opinion of the pre-rac~ hype and th e event itself. Good win's advertising campaign portrayed the riders as gladiators pre· pared to do battle. The " ba tt le" con sisted of riders involved in horrendous ra nk-sla ppers a nd endos. Sunday morning's ra dio commercials advertised that 80 of the best riders would corn pete. "except those in plaster from las t night's crashes," Goodwin fee ls tha t " maybe th ey come to see bloo d a nd gu ts" and that he is just ca pitalizing on the public's mo res. In the interest of getting spectators to 'attend t he race , h is ads put expecta tions of crashes and injuries into the fans' minds before they even reach the stadium . It was no wonder they booed. when at the riders' insistence, certain ju mps were removed. J im m y W einert' s crash on Sunday migh t have sa tisfie d Goo dwin . but I watched with di sbelief as Weinert lay on the track, for al most five minutes , on a section of the cou rse where numerous crashes had al ready occurred , while riders raced by within inches of the fa llen rider. Only a fter that crash was another dangerous part of the track removed . In m y opinion , Mr. Goodwin can take his ad vert ising ca m pai gn a nd his comput er surveys and stuff them , because Supercross is a sport. contested by athletes. and not a circus side-show intended to satisfy th e public's " m ore."? The validity of h is high-Ialoorin ' " . ' surveys m ust be questlone d anyway. as he predicted 100 ,000 total fan atten ·" dance; in reality he barely got half of " that. While Supercross is an important j avenue for exposure , it sho u ld be ad vert ised and presented for what it is~ not what some hot -winded promoter wants it to be . I adm ire the profession alism of t he rid ers who have to put up with the whims of the promoters and the med ia . Bu t there is a po int , a nd I believe we are very close to it, when we will lose sight of the sport of Supercross , only to see Goodwin's version of it. com p lete with spotlights, balloons. fireworks , portable tracks , tatooed ladies. etc. , etc. Supercross is exciting enough as it is, and the AMA , a nd especially the riders, shou ld refuse to be manipula ted by promoters a nd the media who want only to satisfy thei r own ends. My hope is that Mr . Goodwin sticks to real estate , and leaves the promotion of Supercross to those who view it as a sport, not a circus event. NJ MICHAEL T.
