"It was an easy race," explained \ Mang. "T owards the end when I saw the German flags I started waving to the German fans." Before clearing off, Mang was involved in a tough battle with Italian Gian paolo Ma rchetti after overtaking earlv leader Patrick Fernandez. T'he sta r of the race was Australian Graeme Geddes who fin ished fifth in only his second Grand Prix in front of Clive Horton who , for the second week running, was Britain's highest placed solo rider in a Grand Prix. Coventry's Tony Head was not so lucky and retired when his Yamaha holed a piston on the th ird la p . But he was in good company on the retirement list with Venezuelan Ca rlos Lavado losing th ird place on the last lap when he roke a cra nk a nd J acques Bolle seizing just two laps from the finish. Mang's nearest challenger in the cham pionship ta ble , Thierry Espie, crashed on lap seven and Eric Sau l retired with front tire problems. Australia n Graeme McGregor made a good sta rt but stopped with a seized engine on lap nin e. Angel Nieto and Frenchman Gu y Bertin fought a magnificent ba ttle in the 125 race with the tiny Spaniard steal ing the verdict by a couple of Inches at the fin ish. Italian Pierpaulo Bianchi retains his championship lead after finishing fourth . However both Nieto and Bertin are only seven points ad rift in second place. ,Britain's John Kernan finished 25th after a brave ride on an outpaced machine.
