Oxley, Schwartz and The Aminal tame IMS By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA ,JULY 16 ~Boogaloo" Bobby Schwanz made his second appearance of the season and scored his second Scratch Main victory at Inland Motorcycle Speedway Wednesday night. Schwartz, who raced in England on Monday and Ventura on Tuesday, jumped ou t front from his number three starting position with Gene Woods in hot pursuit. Woods was able to pull even with Shcwartz in turn one with Schwartz taking the lead for good coming out of turn two , Woods tried to get by on th e outside and several times pulled al ongside Schwartz but couldn't get by. Jim the "Ani m al" Fishback and defending National Champ Michael Bast had a good battle for third with Fishback beating Bast to th e line behind Schwartz and Woods , "T he Animal" received a big cheer from the crowd in his Handicap Heat. While leading the event, Fishb ack came out of turn two where Dave Miller's bike got awa y from him and went right for Fishback. "The Animal" went high to avoid it. Fish back tapped the wall but Miller's bik e just continued to stay in his way. In typical "Anim al" style, a well-pla ced kick put the bike out of its misery and Fishback continued on his way to victo ry. The huge crowd got turned on during the Handicap Main when San Bernardino's favorite rid er Fishba ck took his first IMS main of the season. "T he Animal" did a fine job as he came from th e 50 wher e he started alongside Bast and Schwartz. Phil Gagnon , Leni Faas and Steve Columbo moved out front at the start. Faas took th e lead coming out of turn two on the first lap ahead of Columbo with Gagnon dropping to third. Faas led th e remainder of the first lap with Columbo slipping by in turn two on the second lap. Faas got back by Columbo at the end of lap two only to lose the lead to Schwartz. Fishback had snuck up behind the leaders, getting by Faas and Gagnon . Riding the outside, Fishback went around Columbo and Schwartz to take the lead coming out of turn four on lap three sending the crowd into a frenzy. At the checkers it was Fishback followed by Schwartz, Columbo, Bast, Faas and Gagnon. Northern California's Glenn Hutchinson made his first appearance a memorable one as he easily won the Second Division Main. Hutchison, who started on the pole, moved out front with Shane Hawley when the gate went up . Hutchinson took sole possession of the lead heading down the back chute on lap one and never looked back.. Tom Burmeister tried 'to get inside Hawley on lap one with Shane shutting the door and hanging on to second the remainder of the race , Hutchinson's biggest challenge came from the cushion in turn four on the final lap as he got on the high -side of the race track , bobbled for a second but recovered in time to be first across the line. Hawley was second with Bur- Bobby Schwanz showed the Ascot crowd how to do it. meister holding off "Crazy" Ed T h u rm an for t hird . Da ve Wooten had an exciting nigh t as he took a spill at the end of th e Third Division Main, was attacked by a gorgeous trophy girl and last , but not least , won the Third Division Ma in. Wooten and Carl Shockley moved out front at the start with Wooten taking the lead for good in turn two. "Fast" Eddy Lynch moved up to have a side- by-side battle with Shockley and then took second from Shockley at the end of lap two. Lynch then cut down Wooten's lead and got inside of Wooten coming out of four. T ime ran out on Lynch as Wooten crossed the line with his front wheel just inches a hea d of Lynch 's. Shockley was third followed by last week's winner Jeff Allison , Kerry Miller and Jeff Havacko. Lynch and Wooten ca me tog ether in tu rn one after they took the ch eckered with both going down. Neither was in ju red and they shook hands while laying on the ground. For Wo oten, the best part of the night was yet to com e as he was attacked by the trophy girl at th e trophy presentation. In the hottest action of the night, the you ng lady knocked Wooten over starter Sid Sutton's flags and th e large wooden container they are kept in. Wooten ended up on the ground with the trophy girl on top and the crowd hollering for more (Wooten was pulling for the crowd as he was also hoping for more). Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Gene Woods del. Bobby Schwartz. Schwartz shows lematAscot By Gary Hoffman GARDENA , CA, JULY 17 If you ' weren't at Ascot. you missed the best racing J.e. Agajanian's quarter-mile track has yet to bring. The " Boogaloo Kid, " 23 -year·old Bobby Schwartz came back from England to show 'em how it's done on the quarter-mile, and show 'em he didl Riding a four-valve Jawa as he does in England , (u nlike 90 % of the .other riders there) Bobby won every heat and semi -final he rode. He took Mike Bast easily in the Feature Match Race when Mike got a shaky start. And when it got down to the Handicap Main Event , Schwanz and the First Division Pros showed everyone what speedway racing is all about. , Dave Miller shot out front first from the 10'yard line with DeTemple behind him and all the way from the 60 was Schwartz in third by the end of th e second turn . By the third lap Leni Faas had moved up to battle DeTemple for first place with Schwartz right on top of them. For a wh ile they were all riding side by side even through the turns, when in the very last lap in turn three, DeTemple and Schwartz bumped bikes a few times and Bobby shot th rough the last turn to ta ke the checkered on what \ turned out to be a flat tire. DeTemple finished no more than a bike behind, and Faas a half a bike behind him , So far, a clean sweep for Schwartz with only one more race to go - the Scratch Main. Bobby drew the po le position with DeTemple next to him then Denny Pyeatt and the champ, Mike Bast on the outside, where he likes it. The tapes went up and Bast shot out first with Schwartz right behind him . But before he could get through turn two, Schwartz lost control and dropped it . Never one to give up , and even though all the riders had long since passed him, Bobby picked up his bike, got it going on his own, and rode as hard and as fast as he could without a chance of winning. With Schwartz far behind, Bast seemed to have no trouble keeping a healthy lead over Pyeatt and DeTemple as they finished one, two and three with Schwartz riding a very discouraging-but proud fourth, But let's not forget Second Division. In their Main event, "Fast" Eddie Thurman once again showed everyone he's ready for a First Division ride winning easily over Cary Faas, and Randy Griffith, both tough competitors here at Ascot. Schwanz will fly back to England Sunday to rejoin his team, but th is Thursday brings more action when Shawn Moran returns, • '- Results FEAlURE MATCH RACE: 1. Bobby Schwartz del, Mike Bast.
