Jimmy Weinert and Mike Goodwin discuss tnlCk layout. Glover was the happy winner of both races. with LOP's Jeff Surwall and Wood trai ling. Almost all of th e prime contenders for the Supercross title were in the main , setting up another potentially super race on the second day of the Superbowl, It appeared to be Glover's weekend, though , and he slid around the first turn in front. "I got an excellent drive off the gate and from there.. .' lh From there, no one got between him an d the checkered, Su n and Gibson were right behind followed by Barnett , Bell and Wise. - Things changed a bit up front on lap two. " It took me a couple laps too long (to do the double ju m p in the south straight)," Sun related later. "I ~as in second a nd saw Brae ju mp it and waited one lap too m uch and J im p,assed me . " Once I let him go by, then I started jumping it and I got right on him, but you can see .it, there's j ust no place to pass out there. There's just one fastest gr oove." It indeed seem ed that was as there was no pass ing in th e front -running trio after lap two , though Sun never let Gibson get away. Barnett went out on lap four as the chain wouldn't stay on, His retirement moved Bell and Wise into fourth and fifth. Bell rode a remarkable race. Despite jamming his knee in the first tum so it was painful and swollen. he motored on and even closed ground on Sun in the last half of the ra ce . Cantaloupi managed to hold off Howerton until several la ps from the end when he slip ped a b it wide coming out of the Tornado. Shu ltz, Mosier a nd Tripes ro unded ou t the top 10. Glover's win was even more laudable . when he poi nted out that his frame was b roken a t t he bottom of th e steering head and his fron t hu b was cracked in two pla ces. "At the beginning of the race, I thought for sure I wouldn't finish , but my mechanic watched real close . and he told me he t hought it was okay and just go for it," sa id Glover. "You hate to do that , just go until it breaks, but it pa id off," Sun agreed that the track was unduly hard on both bikes and bodies. "W e were busting wheels all over the place." he said, " My back 's just hu rt in'.' Several bikes limped into the pits with wobbly rear wheels revealing components near collapse. After the conclusion of the main, a special four-lap match race pitting Saturday's and Sunday's winners was to have been held . Glover, ho wever, did not want to race a broken bike so the runnersup from both races , Hower ton and Gibson , were matched. Gibson got the jump out of the gate and at the end of the first la p , was a bo ut five lengths ahea d of Howerton . Thoug h he appeared to be playi ng it sa fe an d not doing spectac u lar double jumps like Gibson, Howerton , slowly closed the gap to two lengths by the white flag. As th ey went through the left after the Peristyle , Howerton quickly shot underneath Gibson for th e lea d . G ibson kept it dia led , thoug h , a nd blasted right back by in a move that the crowd roared their approval to . Howerton slipped over a small berm to squelch any other chances of pass ing , and Gibson flew past the checkers U,OOOricher. • Results SATU RDAV : 1. Brtx: Glover lYam): 2. Kent Howerton ISuz); 3.
