o 00 0') ~ (Top) Scott Burnworth leads winner Mark Barnett early in the first 125cc race. (Above left) Goat Breker was second in the 500cc event with a 2-2 tally, (Above right) Third place 500cc finisher Marty Moates is chased by fourth place Marty Smith, " Lum berjack" Burgett dropped his Yamaha and the lead he was holding off the starting line by th e time he reached tu m three , Kawasaki test rider Goat Breker wheeled his KX440 past the fallen Burgett and into the lead with Chuck Sun's RC 470 Honda br eathing red flam es on th e green meanie. Stepping in behind were LOP's Gary Semics, Marty Smith of Suzuki . Mosier, Swartz . Englund and King as Burgett rejo ined the pack in 20th place. Gremlins again stuck Danny La Po rt e , th is time before he could even get his Suzuki around th e gn arly high -speed track to com p lete on e lap . " My cha in ca me off. I put it ba ck on , but it came right off aga in so 1 headed for the pits." At the 10 mi nute mark. it was Chuck Sun dancing his way past Brek er. Sun took it and ran with it . but only managed to stay ahe ad of the determined young Goat by some five seconds for the rest of th e ra ce , A good distance ba ck ran Marty Smith for an uncontested third , then Marty Moa tes pushing his way up in the closing laps to take fourth place away from his LOP teammate Ga ry Semics. Gaylon Mosier who had been di cing with buddy Sem ics ea rl ier in t he race , had since ret ired with a blow n rea r brake ba cking plate . Bu rg ett was pu t out of the race as well when the ' usually reliable OW 42 works Yamaha lost its damping in the rear shock. The Washougal National was a class ยท act with the promotors bringing in Larry and Bev Huffman to handle the annoncing chores (and even Wheelie King, Doug Dom okos for th e half-time show). It was Mr. Huffman heralding th e start of the second moto with , "The Cream of the Northwest moto cross giants - Chuck Su n ha s taken the lead with R ick Burgett hot on his tail ," _ ha t had th e highly partisan T fans cheering wildly. Nothi ng else seemed to matter as Bu rgett roc keted his way past Sun on th e downhill ski jump to cla im the lead before th e first lap ended.. .even Marty Mo a tes stuffing his way around Sun for a moment before being repassed by th e series points leader. It was th e Bu rg ett versus Sun fight the crowd wanted to see , and that's what th ey got. Quickly Sun moved his Hond a back up on Burgett and the two began trading -handlebars for glo ry on th e home battleground wh er e th e two ha ve com pe ted against each ot he r for . years . Side-b y-side ' th ey ca reened around th e Washou ga l hillsid e . .stuffing 21 -inch front wheels at ea ch other and int o places where on ly a licensed physcian had th e rig ht to go . lt was obvio us that Su n was frust rated in his co nsta ntly block ed attempts to get back around Burgett , often pulling' past little Rickey from the outside of one turn , only to have the door slammed in his face going int o the next. Finally, Burgett left his door open a little too long and Sun dived for the entrance. "1 got around Burgett, but 1 had to do it by going into the next turn much too hot . and I stalled my motor. I had been feeling pretty comfortable and rel axed, but then Bu rgett a nd Moates .wa nt ed to get into some serious ra cing. I knew it was going to be a long mota and wanted to pace myself, but they wouldn't let m e ," sai d Sun . After stalling his bik e , Sun restarted in third place and quickly made back up the lost d istance by . repassing ' Moates and closing on Burgett. That's when Burgett made his big m istake . " Bu rgett went in to tha t soft berm on the top of the hill ; he jammed his front en d in and lost it (fell down). 1 had almost do ne the sa me t hing m yself a couple oftimes ea rlier," sa id Chuck. Sun retook th e lea d , holding it all th e remaining 20 m inutes to the fini sh. Goa t Breker fou ght his way past Smit h a nd Moates to collec t second place for the moto and seco nd overall . Bu rgett remoun ted after his fall to hang ont o fifth position , just a he ad of Arlo Englund on the Vickery Ya maha . then Mosier , Semics, John Da y and Danny Turner. O nce again Danny LaPorte was 'forced to retire wit h me chanical problems (rom his string of bad luck .
