I.Arlzona·Soathern Nevada· Soathern Californla·Arlzona·S. FOX Marino, Reisinger reignatCMC Saddleback MX WINS By Mike Klinger ORANGE. CA . JUNE 29 Andy Kirker had two top three Saddleback finishes. defending 1979 champ Scott Meyer scored a close one over Joaquin Picazo and "T iger" Tony Jones. All three riders had the lead at one time or another, but it was Meyer at each checkered flag. TheJunior classes were out in force , with the steady riding Mike Kincheloe grabbing the 125s with a 3-2 effort over Alex Leon (5-1), who had a tiebreaker second over David Crowson (1-5). Crowson, who had been steadily picking away at Kincheloe's point lead now finds himself losing four points in the really tight battle. The 250s were not to be outdone. Steve Bolger scored his first 1980 win off another 2-3 go, and Greg Korgie took second over Chuck Kecskes as point leader Richard Mannschreck had fall down and crash problems all night. The largest field of Mini Juniors of the year went to the gate with first year rider Mitch Palmer going two for two over point leader, Kevin Nolan. Palmer's timing was just right as the now and then rider of Speedway 117 won two tickets to the Los Angeles Coliseum Superbowl for his efforts in addition to the Coke gold. And finally , the " Bou nt y Trophy" on Pee Wee "hot-shoe" Jamie Conney remains firmly in her clutches as it wasn 't even close over the Gaumond brothers, Eddie and Norman . The A TCs were back in ever increasing numbers and once again the big match up was Dean Sundahl and Mark "W axie" Weixeldorfer in the Open class . This week it was Sundahl's turn for the tie-breaker win over "Waxie." The 113cc-132cc Modifieds saw Davis Mueller return to his 1979 form with a two for two victory over Phil Finch. If Sears Point - oops , Golden State International Rac ewa y - or Mammoth MX didn't draw all · the riders , the heat kept th e res t of them away. Well , th ere were some di ehards who showed up at Continental Moto-sprots Club's Saddleback MX to take in the action on th e National track. - Robert Marino (Ya m) made it a prosperous day as he won the overall in . the Open Pros. Inrnoto on e, Marino - and SCOll Cavness (Suz) banged handlebars into the first tum with Marino taking the lead on lap four and going on to win . Cavness pursued Marino to the hilt but fell off his machine when the pressure mounted. Cavness finished second with Andy Kirker (Yam) third . Moto two was all for Kirker, riding an all -white , European looking 465cc Yamaha . Coming off the line Marino was third behind Kirker and Cavness. On lap seven, Cavness retired from the competition due to a flat rear tire. Marino then just coasted to an easy second place finish which gave him th e overall with a 1-2 score. Kirker was second overall (3 ·1 ) ahead of Randy Norman (5-3 ). Kawasaki-mounted Robert Reisinger was the thrill for the day in the 250cc Pros . Reis inger was drawing quite a crowd at the double jumps where he performed airborne sky shots to delight the spectators. In rnoto one, Reisinger led from the drop of the gate to the checkered flag. The race for second was a real scene. Tim Theodore (Suz). Lee Ramage (Ya m ), Bryan Maloney (Hon) and Kirker (Yam) were very tight. Theodore retired early and Ramage stalled his machine , leaving Maloney to gain second and Kirker third . While Reisinger opened up an enormous lead , Maloney began to pull the pack for a solid second. Ramage tried to make a comeback and overtake Kirker for third but he was denied and settled for fourth in the rnoto. Reisinger may have won moto two , but for 14 laps Maloney put on a very good charge to overtake the leader. Ramage and Theodore were also in the thick of things but Ramage left th e race with mechanical problems. Within th e last three laps , Maloney mov ed right up on Reis inger, ready to pass him , and then the Honda lost its footing and slid out, setting Maloney back about 10 seconds. Kirker had been trailing Theodore for the entire moco but made his move in th e closing moments and took third overall. So , the day ended for the 250cc Pros with Re isinger gathering a 1-1 tally for th e overall with Maloney second th en Kirker and Bob Ashleigh (Suz). The turnout was a little slim in the 125cc Pros but Steve Pfaff made the best of it. Pfaff took a pair of seconds which gav e him the overall monies, but not until he earned it in both motos. Curt McCuistion (Kaw) won moto one with Eric Baker (Suz ) leading for awhile but Baker turned to th e infield with a flat tire on lap 10. Moto two was all Baker's after fixing the flat. Pfaff again placed second with Tim Shelton th ird and McCuistion fourth . Pfaff scored a 2·2 for th e overall with McCuistion (1-4) second. Bak er (6· 1) was third . then ca me Shelton (4-3). o 00 - ,...-4 In the fevered wor ld of 125 Wor ld Champi onshl p Grand Prix r acinQ. a ne w star is em er QinQ.
