Locey VENTURA . CA ,JULY I The racing was bad (as in good) and the track was bad (as in bad) due to last week's Big Time horse show which is gone, but cenainly Mike Belanger is about to find out what "ouch" means as Tom Ferris and Eddie Ingels try to avoid him at Cal Expo. Orlandi makes it three in a row at Cal Expo By Jann Houston Photo by Terry Parmeter SACRAMENTO, CA,JUNE27 It was a hot, still night perfect for a night out to die Speedway races at Cal Expo and, as usual, no one was disappointed. .. 28 I The pressure was on Paul Orlandi after winning his Scratch Semi, moving into the Scratch Main with sheer determination to make it three wins in as many weeks. Duane Yarrow took the lead off the pole with Orlandi in second from the third position, Ingels third and Mike Faria fourth off the wall. It was a rerun from the week before with four riders so close it was almost impossible to call, although there was no doubt that Yarrow held the lead from the starting gate to turn four on the final lap when Orlandi took it on the outside by inches. The crowd went wild , Orlandi had done it again! Yarrow took second, Ingels third, Faria fourth. As a special added attraction Duane and Paul crashed in turn one after the checkered flag. The Handicap Main got a red flag restart when Ingels started somewhere between the 50 and the 40-yard line. It was back to the 70 for Eddie! Buddy Robinson , up to Cal Expo for the first time this season from Caruthers, came into the Main after winning his Heat and Semi races, and took the lead with Mike Belanger second and Tom Ferris third. On lap two Belanger parked it , causing a three-man, three-bike pileup with Tom Ferris and Ingels. The race was red flagged in the interest of rider safety, 'with Belanger disqualified for causing a restart , On the restart , Robinson got the holes hot with Faria in second , Ferris third. Robinson went down on lap three and Faria took the lead, holding on for the win and beating Ferris by inches. Ingels took third . .' .•• . - - Marv Webster won the Handicap Consolation riding in Division One at Cal Expo for the first time showing true Division One style . Mike Delacy took second, John Volk third. Steve Vieira won his second Division Two Main with Bill Lingley second and Bill Thomas third. In the Division Three Main , Doyle Jester took the lead on lap one holding it until turn four of the final lap when Danny Montgomery turned it on for the checkered flag . Dan Sweeton took third. Yarrow takes all in Napa By Jann Houston NAPA, CA, JUNE 28 Last year's high point man at the conclusion of the five round National Qualifier is still doing it in nonhern California. Currently number two in point standings to " F1yin' Mike" Faria, "Do It " Duane Yarrow took it all in Napa tonight. • . He started out by winning his Scratch Heat, then his Scratch Semi, moved on to take the Handicap Main and came back in a screamer to win the Scratch Main. For some reason the Handicap Main in northern California for the past few races just can't seem to go without protest. As the starting gate went up Marv Webster, who recently moved into Division One, looked smooth and in control as he held the lead with Yarrow in second and brother Allen Yarrow in third. In turn three on lap two , Allen Yarrow temporarily 105t control, fishtailing and connecting with Buddy Robinson's front fender, sending Robinson down and forcing Mike Faria to lay it down . Tom Ferris. who at this point was in fourth , fell in turn one on lap three. The race continued with Duane Yarrow going under Webster on lap three to take the lead. In the meantime, Faria was up and in the infield demanding a restart, as were a few disgruntled fans , headed by the " Mike Faria Fan Club"l Duane Yarrow took the checkered flag with Webster second and Allen Yarrow third . The crowd and a few racers continued to protest until the final, and I do mean final, word came from referee Ron Day . According to AMA rules there had been no reason for a restart. In the Scratch Main , it was Yarrow in the lead from the pole position with Tom Ferris in second, Mike Faria third and Eddie Ingels in fourth ' off the wall. Faria took Ferris on the outside on lap three and Yarrow felt the pressure as Faria tried to apply his well known last-minute push, but Yarrow was hot in Napa as he won by a bike length and took the win , Faria was second, Ferris third and Ingels fourth. In the Division Two Main , Harlan Bast , Jr. , racing for the first time in Napa since leaving the Junior Division when he turned 16 on June 22, took the lead and held it until turn two on lap four when Pat Linn came under him on the inside. Bast lost control resulting in a pile-up in turn two between Joe Leduc and Mark Dragony, .end ing their race right there . Linn won with Mike McDonald second and Bast third . Gary Abel won the Division Three Main , a big tum around after taking out the wall in turn four last week. Second went to Danny Montogmery with third to Dan Sweeton . Results HANDICAP MAIN : 1. Duane Yarrow; 2. Marv Webster; 3. Allen Yarrow ; 4 . Tom Ferres: 5. Mike Faria; 6. Buddy Robinson. SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Duane Yarrow; 2. Mike Faria; 3. Tom Ferris; 4. Eddie Ingels. DIVISION TWO MAIN : 1. Not only was last Tuesday's racing cancelled entirely when the track was covered with tons of sand two days early, but the surface was left in such a state that a few of the riders declined to ride for fear of injury. The most vocal critic, National Champ Mike Bast , left in a huff citing a lack of backbone among those who stayed as well as other physical deficiencies. With one less than one working day to get the track .back in shape, promoter Jim Naylor did his best - it was ridable , but bumpy and dust enough that one expected Model T 's full of Okies to arrive at any moment ala John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath." However, this writer has seen Speedway on much worse tracks than it was last night. As it turned out, there were scarcely any crashes among the veteran riders. just th e, usual amount of motorcycle mayhem among the less experienced. Crowd favorite John Sandona was the story in Handicap racing as he won his first Main event after spending plenty of time in the winner's circle here last season. In the Main, he got a good start off the 30 and was already in second by the second turn. Mighty Moose Kennedy managed to hold the lead for two laps until Sandona passed him on the outside and gradually in creased his lead to plenty. Brad Oxley. with another good night as he made both Mains, passed Kennedy in the last turn for the wrap up spot. It was a familiar tale in the Scratch portion of the program; Loco Boy makes good. Alan Christian won all three of his rides , including the Main, in 'c onvinci ng style. That's four wins up here for Alan , good enough for a tie with the Champ. The local riders again performed to mixed reviews. Bobby "Insane" McLain, the Fillmore Flash, made his seasonal debut after nearly a year's layoff with a broken leg. At times he was brilliant, such as when he won his Handicap heat and the Handicap Consolation. In between, the rust showed. "Radical" Randy Marsh, on the comeback trail , made both Consolation events. Ven turan Dave Smith earned his wings as : he went airborne and took out a section of the crash wall in Second Division action. After Craig Bradley, a three-time winner here, crashed with a huge lead. Dave Van Horn capitalized on the opportunity and cruised to an easy win for 0 -2 honors. And Eddie Clark made the drive home to Cerrritos a pleasant one as he took the D-3 trophy for thesecond consecutive week. The two -wheeled horse show resumes next Tuesday with Bikini , Night. Translation; Wear one and get in free. Bobby " Booga loo" Schwartz returns in two weeks and Shawn Moran , "The Miracle Worker," will be here in three weeks. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1.
