TEN YEARS Wmston Pro Series AGO o 00 0") P""'l Washington's Mt. St . Helens still had nearly 10 years of peaceful slumber left to go, so to liven things up, the Mt. St. Helens M.C. hosted a National Tf and Dick Mann (BSA) erupted and took the win . Mann had battled for several laps with Rookie Dave Aldana (BSA) before the two tangled and Aldana went down. Don Castro (Tri) finished second ahead of early leader Mark Brelsford (H. D). Chuck J oyner (Tri) , who would later dominate the Castle Rock 'TT in the middle of the decade, won -the Amateur main event. A 40-rider squad was selected for the International Six Days Trial and Bud Ek ins, Mike Patrick, Malcolm Smith, Jeff Penton, Ron Bond and Bob FUlan made up the Husqvarnabacked World Trophy team , the first U.S. effort .in World Trophy competition (prior to 1970, World Trophy teams had to compete on motorcycles manufactured in their own country, and it ' was difficult to beat the Czechs riding Harley 74s). The U.S. ISDT team also had a pair of father/son efforts, with John Penton riding along with sons Jeff, Tom and 16·year·old Jack. Herb Uhl was listed, along with son Bill. Edison Dye's Viking Series continued with a round in Puyallup, WA, and the winner of the International class was the same as the winner of the previous two, Heiltlti Mikkola (Hus). Torlief Hansen (Hus) won the second moto , but broke a chain while leading the first. CZ·mounted John DeSoto placed fourth overall and was top American. Valerians, an L.A . shop specializing in two-strokes , was a regular advertiser in the pages of Cycle News, and their, ads were, uh, contemporary'. Desert Heavyweight class points leader Whitey Martino (Hus) took the overall win in the Lost Coyotes hare scrambles. Tom Poteet (Bul) finished second and won the 250cc class. Terry Clark took the victory in the 100cc class aboard a Harley-Davidson Baja. Jim Wilson (Gre) continued to be the hot man in southern California motocross, taking two victories in a day race at Carlsbad, and then two more in two nights of MX at Ascot Park. Speaking of Ascot Park, Norton finall y , got into the winner's circle there as Paul Conserriere took the Trophy Dash and Expert main , and Dewayne Keeter backed him up with a second in the Trophy Dash . Rex Beauchamp (H·D) became only the second out of state Amateur to win on the Gardena half mile. and Gary Scott won his second straight Novice main. 15
