Warsa w.JN 46580 Side by side action at SRA Riverside GP By Sue Senn Photo. by Action Photographc RIVERSIDE, CA ,JUNE 15 Even though the team race is the last race of the day , this was the most exciting race this reporter has ever observed , The overall win was a biller battle right down to the wire between the teams of Keith Fearing/Paul Huffman and Mike Baker / Pau l Krause . The two teams put on a tremendous show but all eyes were on th e I25cc class . Three teams (all East /West M.C . members) had each decided th e number one spo t would be th eirs. These three teams : Exp erts Kent and Kurt Pfeiffer (Ya m) , Experts Kevin Senn/Bill Holmes (H us) and Amateurs Mark Heth/Kevin Case (Yam ) literally stayed sid e by sid e for one and a half hours, This is not un common for two teams (four rid ers ) but this reporter has never seen it done with six riders , The start had Kurt Pfeiffer , Ho lm es and Heth beginning th e duel with Kent Pfeiffer , Sen n and Case contin uing th e ba ili e . Spectators were clim bing power poles to bett er th eir view. When th e course narrowed to barely a llow roo m for one bik e . th e t rio never gave an inch. Rid er s wit h lesse r abi lities would ha ve wiped eac h other out. At one point , in a hazardou s spot , Kurt Pfeiffer a nd Holm es were on th e outside with Heth in th e m iddle. It appeared as if it wer e a staged performance , Kurt and Holmes leaned out and Heth looked as if he 'd been shot from a ca n no n , He sho t forward whi le h is two compadres leaned out , allow ing Heth to go th rough , t hen rejoined him , Each rider rode five of th e 10 la ps and on the 10t h , with the chec kered out , arou nd t he far turn came the trio still side by side. Kent Pfeiffer 's front tire came across' first with Senn inches behind and Case right behind Senn. What a race. This will be one of those "reme,?ber when" stories for quite some tim e . Keith Fearing (C -A) and Paul Huffman (KTM ) took the overall win a nd first 250cc with Mike Baker and Paul Krause taking second overall , first Open. Second a nd third Open were Bill N,,:sh/Ch,,:rles MontiJepre and Doug Kr ibell/Rich Bland. Second and th ird 250cc were Dave Wentz/Darryl Hutch ins and Steve Blakely/Phil Thorstensen. Top 80cc went to Ba rry Crawford/ Keith Senn. Begi n ner 80cc went to Mike Hallahan/Raymond Ameif. The 80cc race started the day's events and Barry Crawford (Suz) aced "Racin' Jason" Prater (Yam ) for this overall. The 81 -200cc race featured many of the team race participants. On the ' first lap the lead belonged to the oldest of th e Pfeiffer brothers , 23- year-old SCOll who rid es for Premier Yamaha. Behind him a ferocious battle was going on be tween Kent Pfeiffer, Bill Holmes, Danny Bartholomew , Kurt Pfeiffer and Mark Heth. Twenty-on eyea r-old J erry Trimble , who rides for Qu in cy Kawasaki , jumped out of the pa ck to join SCOll Pfeiffer in a side by sid e duel where Trimb le proved th e victo r after SCOll lost th ird gear. The pack co ntin ued th ei r battle to th e end b ut fin ished in th e above order. T rimble , from El Cajon was ecstat ic ' with his win . He commented " It was a good co urse, no dust and cool. I d id n't kn ow tha twas SCOll Pfeiffer , I only knew he was on e heck of a good rider." T op Novice rid ers were John Espo sito and Vick Lohr whil e B. Massari . Doug Young and Reid Ferguson ca pt u red th e Beginner class . T wenty-three-year-old SCOll Kinnier, riding for Premier Yamaha , seem ed to have the Open race all sewed up until he was joi ned by a late sta rt er, Mark Asbury on his box stoc k Kawasaki. Asbury moved into the lead and went for an easy win after Kin nier developed a flat. Keit h Fea rin g (C-A) clai med seco nd - wirh Bob Maxwell (Ya m) taking th ir d . Top Amateurs were Jerri Marqus , Doug Kribell and Jerry Seeley, Novice honors went to Charles Sanner, Tin Howard and Billy Nash while Beginners wer e topped by Bill Seifert, Ra r,· mond Solomon and Terry Roberts. The special Father's Day father/chili race overall win went to the dazzlirg team of Dallas and Mike Baker. Tlis event brought riders out of the woolwork. Many fathers found out whit their kids go through . Deke Shamblir, ridi ng with son Shannon, commented, " I'd rather be put in a pit of ra ttl esnakes than do that again. " This eveat was 100 % trophies and strictly for fen - no points but 70 teams signed t..p and for the four laps it was a real free for all, Mike Baker (Yam) came back in. mediately after the special team rare to claim the overall in the 250cc clas, Being Craig Adams' (KT M) stronger competition for quite sometime, ths I8-year·old from Orange has it all together. Craig is not used to taking a second in this class but this win went 10 Mike. . Phil Thorstensen aced Don Miller for th ird whil e the Amateur leaders were Fred Strong, Tom Mitchell and Charles Montilepre. Novi ce winners were Kenny Guyett , Rob Hall and Mark Ford. Begi n ners were Bill Luna , Dal e Morse and Ji n McM inn . Dallas Baker proved to be the block behind the chi p by lak ing the overa .l in th e Sen ior ra ce . Lyn n McGraw who rid es for Rustan Yamaha , took the lead th en seized, turning the lea d over to Dallas. T he big battle was bet ween Bill Manley, Bryon Farnsworth and Vern Heth who finished in tha t order, Am ateur laurels went to Harry Thornburg, Rick Hobbs and Dennis Grissom, Peterson, Pilato pulverize CMC AscotMX By To m Co rley GARDENA , CA ,JUNE 18 Val Tamietti brought his TNT
