Atwood Dirt Rider members made a couple of track changes for the sixth round of the Coors Midwest Motocross Championship event that met the approval of most riders. And Luedke appeared to favor them also as he took control of the first moto and steadily pulled out a huge lead. Action behind had Pickering in second the whole way on his Kawasaki . A tangle with another rider put fourth-place Kurt Ross down and allowed Robert Vogt to take that position over on the fourth lap and keep it to the flag. . Luedke turned a third -place start the next moto into the lead position midway through the first lap and again steadily moved away from the rest of the field. Vogt worked around the fast, dry course into second to claim second overall over Pickeri ng . Kurt Johnston 's Suzuki led Mike Walker, Jeff Ba rgell and Mitch Rora ba ugh through the first turn in the 125cc Sen ior class . Half a lap later, Johnston bailed off and got up to pursue Rorabaugh , whom he passed by the second la p. Ba rgell fell when the front end of his Suzuki washed ou t while Johnston was applying pressure for second place, which allowed both Johnston a nd Rorabaug h past. A la p later Johnston worked by the H on da of Walker for the lead and kept it to th e end. Other positions hel d to the finish, although Bargell moved up close to Rora baugh whose throttle hand grip was weakening due to a practice crash that produced a sore. swollen thu m b . Alt ho ug h W alker ch allenged Bargell the whole race , he was ne ver a ble to slip by. Dick DeW ester of Benkelma n , NB, put in one of his finest 250cc rides this season on his Uni-Trak, winning the first moto of the 250cc Seniors and fall- ing on the last lap of the second mota to lose the overall, but retain second overall. DeWester got around early leader Kevin Wagoner on the second lap and maintained the number one position the rest of the way . Wagoner stayed ahead of Tom Kuhl and Danny Hoover for second. In the second moto, Kuhl put his Yamaha int o the lead in the first turn over DeWester. Wagoner and Hoover. DeWester couldn't get close enough to Kuhl for the lead , but his second place would give him the overall. He held it easil y for the entire moto until just three turns from the flag when he slid out , giving up second and the overall. Kuhl inherited the overall. DeWester claimed second , and Hoover got third. Menlo,' KS, rider Vitus Meier put in two excellent rides to claim the win in the 250cc Junior class over a field of 22 . Kawasaki -mounted Bret Weaver claimed second whi le Tom Bohl rolled his Yamaha in for third. Dan Hoover led every lap of the Open Seniors on his Yamaha . In the first rnoto , Jesse Wessels pushed him all the way in on his 440 Maico, bu t was never a ble to pull close enough for a serious bid for the lead . Dave Emerick claimed third behind Wessels. Hoover led at the start of the second moto with Wessels right after him once again. Hoover opened up a slight lead by the third lap while Wessels had a secure second over Emerick. Then the bright red Maico loaded up exiting a tight left-band er and Wessels was left at the side of the track wh ile it slowly cleaned out. Hoover went on to win it easily over Emerick. A.J. Warta of Atwood extended his points lead in the O pe n J unior CMMC chase with a solid second placing behind Ed Heim. Heim won both motos with Warta in the re for a pair of seconds. Tom Bohl placed third in the final moto for third overall. Greg "T ree" Peterso n was involved in a firs t turn crash in the second m oto a nd seri ous ly sha ken up . T here was a n area of very soft sa nd at 90 feet th at , com bined with the pile of sand a t the bot tom of the hill , stop pe d most of the riders. Duffy Dou glas on a Yamaha 465 was the first rider to get pa st th e hump ca use d by a trail across the hill j ust above the soft sa nd. He wor ked his way up to 129 feet before the whoop-de dos on the top ha lf brought him to a stop. It looked like the hill woul d be opened up when Will Alford (who else?) and his Kawasaki 750 somehow went all the way. His time of 14.40 seconds is an indication of the difficulties encountered on the trip u p the hill. Tom Anderson's 1000cc Triumph was going good and seemed like it would take him all the way. Something went wrong as the bike quit running right and Tom decided to stop at 152 feet. This stood for first in the Open class. Because the hill was getting softer, there were more problems in the 'second round . The soft spot was ea ten out into a pocket that caught most of the riders. Cleve Martin took his 370 Bul to the right and got past the pocket, but a bush and the hump combined to stop him a t 110 feet. Things stayed pretty mu ch the same un til the unofficial Exhibition class which ran both runs after all the Sportsman classes . Wi ll Alford started off on his Bulta co 370 and went to 110 feet before Martin's bush jumped out and got him , too . Mike Polley brought his Trium ph 650 up to the line. bu t instead of the right, tried the left. The Triumph hung up on the ledge and was goi ng too slow to power over it at 110 feet . On the second rou nd Alford squirreled ou t of the hole and went about 20 feet before deciding that he had ruined the run. No one else came close so Mike Polley was lefr with the job of beating Alford. He tried to go all the way, bu t his Triumph hu ng up at 105 feet. He did take firs t in the Exhibition "lass and beat his da d again . Results SPORTSMA N ClASSES BS16-11 I: 1. Rodney Dawes. BS11 2-141 1. Chari.. Dawes. : 100: 1. Jackie Anderson. 125: 1.
