CAl iFORNIA 8'1018 24 C21313&f..'41 ~ for Kevin Hopkins to tum in the fastest lap times on his Dick Allen's 125cc Yamaha. Racing on both days started with a combined 100 and 175cc class : On Saturday Cliff Thomas, also on a Dick Allen's Yamaha (but it l75cc IT), led the Amateur/Experts to the bomb. Kevin Hopkins was hot in pursuit, followed by l75cc Amateur Chris Crandall (Hus). The first IOOcc Expert came next , piloted by Bill Mattox (Yam). Hopkins and Thomas traded sports for the first mile. They were so close at times that they could have passed for siamese twins. Then Hopkins got th e lead , with Thomas pushing all the way. Mattox slipped his I /l Oth lite r sized mo unt by Am a teur Cra nd all to mo ve into third overall . As they completed the first lap the fro nt ru n ne rs were set at Ho pkins , T homas , Ma tt ox, Crandall. and Pete Poste l (Yam). Back ab ou t 10th overall was Bobby Charters (Suz) as first 100cc Am a teur. At the fin ish the overall over was set as Hopkins . Thomas, Ma ttox and Crandall . ' On Sunday the sta n was about a quarter mile long , dropping into a canyon and then up over a hill . Kevin Hopkins was first to th e canyon, Cliff Thomas was second, and Paul Krause (Suz) was third , followed by a mob , At the end of lap one the order was set at Hopkins, Thomas, Pete Postel, Chris Crandall (first Amateur) , Oren Beck (second Amateur) , and Scott Atchison back about 10th but moving fast. After seven laps Hopkins finished a bo ut 20 seconds ahead of Thomas. Atchison gained first place per lap to moved into fourth o ve r all , first Amateur, behind Pete Postel. Rumored to be his last Novice ride , Tim Sinclair easily won the l 25cc Novi ce race on Su nd ay. Ex-Tra ilbiker Dave Morrison made it seco nd , with Er ic Toren o ge t ti ng t hird . Fir st Trailbike wen t to Mike French while first Beginner went to #251 c. On a re a r flat from the second lap , Rene Buelna managed to finish at third Beginner . The third event of the day was the 250s. In the Amateur/Expert race on Sa turday Paul Krause (Su z) borrowed Dad's bike and led the race to the bomb. About half the way around lap one Chuck Stearns and Kenny Upp passed Krause like he had the bike on the kickstand. Stearns and Upp went at it with Stearns coming out on top . On Sunday Kenny Upp was clearly in the lead at the bomb . At the end of lap one, the order was Upp , Rick Schumaker ( KT M), and Mike Sixberry. (Sixberry having ridden the night before at Mickey Thompson's Coliseum affair.) The first Amateur was Scott Postma. On lap three Upp led . Sixberry moved past Schumaker and Stearns had fourth nailed down . Bill Saltzman came next as first Veteran followed by Scott Postma as first Amateur. On lap four Sixberry dropped out , problems unknown, allowing the rest of move up . On lap five Upp had the lead well in hand , Schumaker was second and Stearns and Saltzman were trading places back a nd forth. At the finish the order was set a t Up p , Schumaker, Steam, Sa lt zman , and Postma as firs t Am ateu r . O n the Novice sid e Sunday the turnout was quite small. Number 409X took the lead right from the start and kept it for six laps. Brian Statham had second place on the first lap but dropped back to fifth on the second lap. He then moved up to third for the next two laps, second for lap five and the finish. The Amateur/Expert Open Class on Saturday found Dan Smith in front after ha ving battled with Bill Saltzman most of the way . Third overall wis Gary Mulconery as first Amateur. On Sunday Dan Smith and Howard McCasland (Yam) ca me th rough the bomb together . At the end of lap one t he order was set at Smith , !\1cCasland, Sa ltzman , Mulconery , and Greg Thomas (Yam). O n lap two Sa ltzman got by McCasla nd and T hom as got by Mu lcon ery. On lap th ree Saltzma n develo ped a fla t letting Thomas move into second . On lap five the order was the same. Meanwhile on the Novice side Sunday they saved the best for the last because this race p roved to be very exciting. Tom Clark took the lead early in the race after breaking one shock on the way to t he bo mb. Despite the broken shock he led for the first th ree laps until th e other shock ga ve u nde r th e strain of do ub le d u ty. This let Begin ner David Holmes ta ke the lea d while Vete ra n T . T hom pson was right behind holding down first Novice Vet. A newcome r from CRC, Ma ry Aufrance 's hus band was fou rth un til a back fl a t slowed him down consider a bly . In the meantime Greg Brown JUSt kept moving up . The same went for Rex Pitts (Novice Vet ) until he took a nasty fall at the top of the hill and scraped his arm pretty good. Carl Zylstra had all he could do to stay ahead of Rick Nuss (Beg) while Vet Beginner C . Wright kept moving between them . After six laps David Holmes again finished first Beginner , first overall , a repeat of Saturday. David may have m issed out on two Novice to Amateur tra nsfer rides because he hasn't been ab le to get his novice stripe. Greg Brown came in as first Novice, second overall with Rex Pitts, firSt Novice Vet, right behind , The Senio rs on Sa tu rda y were led to the bomb by Earl Roese ler on a Da le's Modem Cycle Yamaha , followed by Ron Bebo on a 250cc Yamaha. After six la ps and a whole lot of accusations of course cutting running rampant. Roeseler was first to the finish followed by Gary Charters (Suz). On Saturday the Women's race got to see a new face in the top spot. Lori Farmer, being the true desert racer she is. missed th e Women's Nationals to race the desert . She had the lead the whole way . In second spot was a newcomer to the District, Mary Kay Aufrance, Mary has ridden mostly CRC . She p ie -plated her 125cc Yamaha to a second overall. Another surprise was Patrice Payne (Firs t Novice) at third overall on her 250cc. Diane Wells came i n fourth for first 125cc Amateur honors. Point-hungry Tricia Farmer came limping in fifth in much pain from her recently broken wrist. First Beginner was Jean Overholt on a I25cc and Desert Daisy Margie Dickinson. riding her first European Scrambles , came " in as second Beginner. In the Senior race on Sunday Al Guzman borrowed a new 250cc Suzuki fro m Gary Charters. He told Gary he would ta ke it easy. Well, Guzman led , the Seniors to the bomb followed by Ron Bebo and Morris Norman (Hus). Guzman must have decided he m ight be riding a borrowed bike too hard so he let Bebo have a 30-second lead at the end of lap one. This duo being followed by Morris Norman , Hoyt Statham and George Zuber and back about eight h overall , Earl Roeseler and Gary Charters in ninth. The first Amateur. P. Zeigler, was back about 12th overall on a 250 . On lap three Bebo had about a one minute lead on Norman with Guzman nowhere in sight. Zuber was third and Roeseler in fou rt h . Hoyt Statham stopped at home check to quit and report some alleged course cutting. By la p five the lapped riders made sorting positions behind the leaders next to impossible. After seven trips arounds, the order past the checkered was Roeseler, Norm a n , and a tired looking Bebo. On Sunda y th ere were some new faces in the Woman's race. Diane Holem a n and Lynette Zuber wer e on the sta n line a little weary after ha ving ' ridden the Women's Nation als at Ca rlsb ad the day before. Sunday's race had a little more com petition fo r first and second. Farmer came through first but just a few feet behind her was Jolene Pa yne on a 250cc KT M. Mary Aufrance was third and Dia ne Holeman fourth wit h Diane Wells a nd Lynette Zuber right behind on the first la p . In the second , th ird , an d foun h laps Farmer kept th e lead with Pa yne right behind her all the way. Little sister, Patrice Payne didn't have as good of luck, though, because on lap four she was towed in with a broken coil. Come time for the checkered flag a whole lot of whoops and hollers came from the Payne family as Jolene crested the hill in site of the finish instead of Farmer. It was quite a race to the checkered, but Payne held the lead with Farmer taking second. Lori apparently fell while trying to get past Beginner Jean Overholt. Diane Holeman came in third . with our newcomer Ma ry Auf ra nce at fou rt h . getti ng first 125cc. Then it was Diane We lls and one tired Lyne tte Zube r. Alice Leroy came in as first Novice (not too bad for her first No vice ride!) wit h Je anette La ng gett ing second bu t just glad it was over. First Begin ner was Ma rgie Dickinso n . ' •
