Next it was Chuck Sun's turn, kick ing out the gears on his series lead ing Pro-Link Honda to stu ff his wa y past both Bu rgett a nd Semics on lap three for th e lead. Then came Moates, blasting his way up the middle and taking over from Sun. The lea d was continuously changing so fast it was next to impossible for announcer Bruce Flanders to keep track . By the 10 minute mark . a fter a two la p handlebar twister, Sun stuffed his way back around Moa tes and int o the lead again . Carlsbad GP winner Moates was confi de n t tha t he could have sta yed with Sun and challenged him a ll th e way to the fini sh line. But • near the mi d -poin t in the moto he could hear his Yamaha's frame breaking apa rt beneath him , and he knew it was all over . Burgett continued to hold onto sec ond spot just behind Sun after Moates eased off the pace, but LaPorte and Gibson were charging hard on him from behind and the Lumberjack's fate was in jeopardy. It was obvious the two Honda jockeys had the track wired, particularly a 10-foot high road crossing which everyone else was jum p ing up onto, then jumpiug off the other sid e landing on flat ground which was certa inl y proving hard on bikes . Both Sun and Gibson , on the other hand , had better lines coming OUt of a tight switchback before the road and could nail the throttles on their RC 450s hard enough to jump ai:.d clear the entire road in beautiful sideways cross- ups , landing front wheel down smoothly on th e downslope of the other sid e. Both were making so much tim e that Su n began pulling out his lead there and Gibson was looking for room to cle ar ou t his wa y past LaPorte and Bu rg ett . " I was trying to pass L a Porte for third when he ran into me and knocked me into the fence ," said Gibson a fterwards . "1 had to get m y bike rest arted again and was left wa y back." Gibson still collected fou rth for th e moto. LaPorte continued to hound Bu rg ett lap after lap , the two yellow bikes hidden in a cloud of dust , wit h Dynamite Danny finally charging p ast Burgett out of the uphill turn by the checkered flag to la tch onto second by a wheel length . Fifth spot turned int o a heat battle too in the closin g laps among Mosier, Semics, Sta ten and Marty Smith. Cassin' Ga ylon Mosier came out on top with his rear wheel disintegrating at the fin ish line a fter a hard charge back up fro m a stalled motor earlier in th e race that had left him back in 10th a t one point. There wasn't as much fighting the second moto as Chuck Sun jammed his Crippa -tuned Honda right int o the lead off the start with LaPorte in sec ond , then Staten, Breker, Sern ics a nd loca l hero Dean W iggins on a Wiggins Electric/Fox Maico dropping in behind. Quickly other rid ers began dropping out ; Staten with his earlier leg injury still hurting him , Stackable with a thrown chain , Semics and Mosier with bike problems. Lap after lap it was LaPorte pushing Sun around the track , wa itin g for a cha nce to get past . .. any opening or a mistake at all . At the ha lfway point in the race tha t chance ca me . as La Porte stu ffed his way p ast , but t he n boggled a few corners lat er and Su n fou nd h imself with a clear shot a t th e lead again . LaPorte went right b ac k to work to try to ge t a round Sun aga in . The final cha nce came with just two la ps to go as La Porte got around again . Then with a lap left , LaPorte went too wid e in a co rner , Su n dived for th e inside and he ld the momentum the short distance left to the finish . "Da n ny rode fantasti c that second mota," related a modest Chuck Sun afterwards . "1 didn't think I could keep up with him the first time he passed me, but then he fell and I got back around him . He got back up and caught me so fast , I knew he was riding faster than me , Then he passed me again , but this time I forced myself to keep pressing him . When I saw that opening he left me that last la p going into that corner off the road ju m p, I went wide and bounced off the berm , using my speed to cut inside of him and repass him . Danny was faster , but he also made a few mistakes." Jim Gibson did even better the second moto, pushing his way up to fourth spot again in a figh t with Goat Breker. But Breker held off Gibson at the fin ish line to give Kawasaki its highest moto finish of the day. Marty Smith wasn't fa r be hi nd in fift h , the n Burgett who had problems keeping up his pace the closing laps, top privateer Alan King on Maico who won the Florida Series earlier this year, Arlo Englund , Alan Smith and Dean Wiggins rounding out the top 10. • Resul ts 12Scc NAT: 1.
