Rick Blackwell, back from the Supe r. cross wars , b roke from the pack j ust in time to get handed t hird place as Farmer stopped for a soil sample. T he com bina tion 0, a new track a nd new bike were ta king Blackwell some time to get used 10 . As he m oved into third place , he seem ed lU find his rhythm , putting serious p , ,,ssu re on Cisneros. Da vis -,egan wha t look ed to be a repeat perform ance followed by Billy Harrison and Ronnie T ay lor. Davis a nd Harrison quickly built sa fe cushions, b ut Taylor was feeling pressure from Blackwell who was now looking very good on his Kasson -sponsored Yamaha . Blackwell was entertaining no ideas of a repea t perform a nce and passed Tay lor a nd Harrison fairly quickly, but Davis already had a seemingly in surmountable lead. Blackwell began to showcase his national talents as he literall y tore up the track. singlehanded - ly moving one berm out about three feet in five laps! W ith three turns left Davis' lead had shrunk from severa l hundred yards 10 five. Da vis was making no mistakes and Blackwell had no time to wa it for one. Bla ckwell made his move on a jump about three turns from the finish , flying past Davis in mid-air, Ba rs tangled and tires scru bbed as they landed side by side standing Davis ' Hond a on its front wheel while Blackwell and his Yamaha went careening to the outs ide of the track. Both riders saved it , Davis grabbed the inside and the lead. Blackwell had to really scra m ble and went into the final tu rn without shutting off, jamming Davis and using his Honda for a be rm . Both bi kes seemed to stumble for a second but Blackwell clutched first and grabbed the win by inches! Everyone at the tra ck was on their feet for this a nd saw some of th e finest raci ng of the yea r. Over 30 rider Darius Gramely and his Kawa sak i 175 Enduro added some sp ice to the second Open Intermediate moto as he had a knock -down , d ragout (li te ra lly) dice with moto winner J oaquin Effinge r. Gra mely's berz erk o techniques ha d him waving his head ligh t all over the sky. Gramely finally passed Effin ger but knocked him dow n in the process.
