CA Q1406 PHONE 213-873-2141 until Saturday evening, the riders were enthusiastic about the running of this event. Pit crews also appreciated the large. easy to find gas check area. So ends the spring schedule of the 10 event NMA Enduro Series with two wins for Church and one each for Duronso, Lykke and Morgenthaler. The second half resumes in September. Following Church in scoring was Open A rider Dave Bowers on a Husky 390 with a 20 point loss. Tom Rucker on an older Honda took 125A with a 21 point loss and Don Rhodes won the Super Senior class and the admiration and respect of many young riders with 28 points lost on his Husky 250 . FREMONT, CA,JUNE 11 Steve Church , aboard his ITized YZ 465, took his second win of the NMA season at the Spring Enduro. Sponsored by the Mt. . Benji Zakarian and Mike Inderbitzen kept things hot at Fremont Raceway's Wednesday night show winning the 250 and 500cc Ex- Baker M.C. , it was the fifth enduro of the season and was sanctioned as an AMA Regional. The club put it all to gether and had something for everyone - tight , quick trail sections where the small bores excelled, long uphill logging roads for the big bores, fast timed sections where everyone lost time and easy slowly timed sections everyone could zero . Resets were intelligently used. Pavement and good logging roads put the good riders into Check I with an easy zero . More logging road , some trail and more zeroes brought Check 2 up. It was in this section in the fog that Don Hammer, trying to make up time after a Kaw had him blocked in a rocky uphill section, failed to negotiate a diminishing radius turn and found himself off the edge and 20 feet below the road with a broken wrist. A combination of logging road, good fresh trail. good old trail and a superfast schedule dropped a few points off everyone's score at Check 3. Good logging road quickly became a seven mile-an -hour section of old trail tha t beca me a creek bed with washouts and downed trees which lasted two miles right up to the gas check 47 miles out. From gas into Check 4 was pave· ment with a 30 mph average. Then it was up the mo untain and into the fog on a logging road and tight trail , still on a 30 mph average to Check 5_ Again . everyone was late. Here , Greg Lykke , frequent overall winner, spotted the check, checked h is time and odometer, hit a rock and slid off the roa d over the bank. Lykke left the bike more embarrassed than hurt , but the ITI 75 was finished for the day. It was then down the mountain on loggi ng roads continuing the 30 m ph average. From 6 to 7, it was a tigh t trail and another fast schedu le with good point losses. Just after the check, the road offered a spectacular view of the Nooksack River below and an easy road ride took riders to the finish. Aside from grem lins Which crept int o the route shee t four days befo re the event and kept m ixing thin~ up pert shows respectively and respectably showing that th e Valley boys are the hottest around. Zakarian's Modesto KX250 never looked better and after a couple of false starts, bea t out the number on e Can-Am of Kim Jorgensen and the stock-framed CR250R of David Boyles out of Spinetti's ofJackson, Kurt Chandler made mincemeat of the 100cc Expert class, winning over Kelly Fischer on the Yamaha of Salinas special. Chris Carr was out for the night with both motors inexplicably not running. Bodie Shepard continued his 7-yea r-old winning ways be ating out Brya n Taber for the 80cc J u nior win . Chandler came back to make it a double-header win with a first in the 80cc Experts on his Kawasaki of Salinas KX over Craig Johnson and Kelly Fischer riding his Fischer Construction special. Al Rudy and the Can -Am still have control of the 250cc Novice class and his dad , a former big-time pro, should be proud of his efforts, Jim Ashley took second and Bill Baker third. Shawn Black made the trip over from Stockton to try out his Can-Am and proved it a winner in the 250cc Junior class with Mike Zimmerman in for second. The 250cc Expert race was a multiflag affair and Benji Zaka ria n was the big winner over Kim Jorgensen and the Jorgy Can-Am. Dave Boyles continues to surprise many riding his stock frame Honda against the many Champion a nd BOSS frames an d d oing so well. Billy Scott took the fourth-pl ace poin ts and money over Rocky Rob inson on the Cycle Engineering Yamaha. Dou gie Ba ber , the former Mini kid , copped the 360cc Novice show while Frank Sa nchez, J r. , was tops in the 360-500cc J u n ior class over Rich Kros ke and the Cycle Sa lvage Honda formerly run around by Mickey Krusemann . The 360c c Expert class is still very big around these parts due to the large quantity of Honda iron. It was another pa rade for most of the laps but when the checkered fell , it was Dave Boyles .. ~ . . . . . .. .
