Orlandi does it again at Cal Expo By Jann Houston SACRAMENTO , CA ,JUNE20 W a rmer weather has finally arrived in Sacramento as the northern California Speedway season con tin ues. Every week gets more 26 exciti ng and full of more su rp rises. The race for points gets more intense as the weeks go by, clea r in everyo ne's mind th a t only th e lOp ten from north ern Ca lifornia will qu alify for th e fiverou nd Na tional qualifier to be held in August , beg inning at Cal Exp o ' on August 9. . Riders and fans alike will agree that the Scr at ch Main was th e most bea u ti ful. thrilling and unforget table disp lay of Speedway to be seen a t Cal Exp o in recent memory and very possibly eve r! It was "Do It " Duane Yarrow on the pole, "Mighty Mouse" Paul Orlandi in the second position , " Ma rvelous" Marc Prince in third and "Flyin' Mike" Faria on the wall. As the starting gate went up, Orlandi jumped into the lead. In turn two it was a fou r man dead heat. As they headed down th e straightaway it was Orlandi, Faria , Yarrow and Prince, but again in .turn three they were side by side and sideways all the way int o turn four. Tha t's the way th e race conti nued, fast, side- by-side precision raci ng. O rlandi co nt inued to lead in the straightaways only to find his three competitors with him again in the turns . However, "Mighty Mouse" tu rned it on when it counted making it two in a row at Cal Expo! It was O rland i's night as he made it a clean sweep in the Scra tch division, winning his H ea t, Sem i a nd the Main . While Orla nd i was doing it in the Scratch d ivision , Dave Faria. Mike's older brother, did it on the Handicap side of the program . Aft er winning his Handicap Heat and Sem i rac es, the annou ncer said, "Well folks: Dave's fast and hot tonighd" If anyone needed convincing. they got it in the Handi cap Main . Dave took the lead on lap one with Marc Prince in second and Tom Ferris third . Prince wen t wide in turn three of lap th ree and Ferris moved into second with Mike Faria slipping into th ird . Dave was ho t and moving like a bol t of lightni ng, taking the checkered flag with his closest competi tion half a lap beh ind. In th e Division Two Main , Doyle Jeste r made it back-to-back wins , after winning th e Ma in in Napa last Saturda y. Steve Vieira was second . J erry Laney th ird . Pat Linn won the Division T h ree Main after doing a wild wheelie between turns two and th ree on lap three. It not only th rille d th e crowd , but undo ubtedlv made Pat's hea rt beat a little faster! For a few moments it looked like Mike Bast was ou t there ag ain. Ron Swee ton too k second. Marv W ebst er third . In the Junior Divison Main, John Cryer from Reno too k first . Harlan Bast, Jr. second a nd J ohn Houston , Jr. th ird. This was Ha rlan Bast. Jr.: Prince gets it together in Napa By Jann Houston NAPA , CA ,JUNE21 A summer breeze kept tempera tures a b it on t he cool side, however, the excitement in the grandstands at the T own and Country Fairgrounds quickly warmed thi ngs up as ra cing got underway in Na pa . T he Scra tch Main consisted of no rthern Californ ia' s current top four poi nt me n. Mike Faria, Dua ne Yarrow, Eddi e Ingles and Tom Ferris. W ith a field like tha t everyone knew what kind of fast . wild a nd fierce com pe tit ion they could expect. No one was disappointed. "Fl yin' Mike" Faria shot into the lead from the pole position with "Do It" Duane Yarrow in seco nd, off the wall. Yarrow went wide in tum two of lap two giving Tom Ferris t he chance to mo ve into second, Eddie Ingels into third. Ferris put on the pressu re bu t had to settle for second as "Flyin' Mike" held on for the win . Ingels was third . Yarrow fourth. The Scratch Ma in m ay have been the fastest race of the evening , however , the thrills and excitement ca me in the Handicap Main. After a red flag restart d ue to a rolling start by Ingels, causing hi m a 20 yard penalty, it was Mike Belange r in the lead with Marc Prince in second . Prince came under Belanger in th e lead with Marc Prince in second. Prince came under Belanger on lap two in turn two ta king the lead . In turn one of lap three Belanger went do wn causi ng Orland i to lay it down. Belanger was ou t as O rlandi recover ed and was back in the race . In turn one of la p four Faria and Ingels tangled and the ra ce was red flagged in the interest of rider safety . T he old rule that a ra ce is called complete if the third lap has been completed IS no longer in effect. The new ru le says a rider must ta ke the chec kered flag. A restart was ordered. You could see the determination in Marc's eyes right through his hel met as the starting gate went up. He took the lead in turn one ho lding the po le as Ferris and Faria a p plied constant pressure waiting for a mistake and the chance to move on him . The chance ne ver ca me. Marc showed the fans in Napa an example of how it's done in Speedway as he held the pole and d id it sideways around every turn taking the checkered flag and his first H andic a p Main of the 1980 Season. Ferris was second , Fari a third . The night wasn't Over for Marc. After receiving his tro phy, he ca me back in the very next race to win the Scratch Co nsolation . In the Division II Main, Ro n Sweeton got the holesho t and held the lead to win . Bob Ho lmes was second, J oe LeDuc t hird. T he Division III Main was rest a rt ed whe n over half the field went down on lap one. On the resta rt, Da nny Montgomery took the lead. In turn four of la p two, Gary Abel took the wall so hard he broke the woodl However , he walk ed awa y.
