Round six
Michele Rinaldi scored a
histo ric win at Mote Var chi in
his homela nd when he became
the first Italia n to win a MX GP
on an Italian machine. His two moto
wins also took him within six points of
th e 12Scc World Championship points
lead.
Last year. Mauro Miele won th e
Swiss round on a KTM with second
and third placings and a few weeks ago
Rin aldi won a race in Yugoslavia. but
the TGM rider's overall and race wins
cert ainly marked a milestone in th e
history of Italian MX.
World Champion Harry Everts tr ied
to make a com eback from injury. but
the pain proved too great and he failed
to fin ish a race. He remains at the top
of the points chart. one ahead of
you ng Marc Velkeneers who was a
non-starter after breaking a number of
bones in his foot the previous week .
Rinaldi was a clear winner of the
first moto, 20 seconds ahead of Er ic
Geboers and Tetsumi Mitsuyasu , an d
he was close behind the 17-year -old
Belgian , now riding Harry Everts'
spare works Suzuki, when the
youngster pulled out suffering from
nausea in moto two .
lt was a fabulous day for th e
Italians. Apart fr om Rinaldi's victory .
they saw Japan's Torao Suzuki clinch
second place overall on another Hiroengined machine. the Aprilia , and
Dario Nani, Mauro Miele . Franco
Perfini,
Renato · Zocchi ,
Ivano
Alborghetti and Maurizio Dolce all
finished in the top ten of at least on e
race. Dolce . a graded rider in th e
500cc class, could not score points,
howeve r. despite finishing third in th e
second race on a Fantic.
