Long motes are the first thing to go when th ere are eit her too many riders or things are poorl y organized, but everyone got in a lot of riding time here. T he rigors of the long motos put hea vy demands on th e machinery as well as the ride rs, bu t th e faithful Parts-in -the-Pits man was here to help mee t th e cha llenge of keeping the bikes running. It 's easy to take him for gr ant ed because he's usuall y th ere when you need him , but Parts-in -th ePits oft en makes th e key differ enc e between riding or not and his absence would be sore ly felt . Without watering th e track on Saturday , controlling the dust was not a real possiblity but a strong prevailing bree ze blew it - qu ickly away so that whether it was a problem or not was a matter of individual temperament. Some riders actually like mud runs while others will welcom e a little dust if it means no mud. Phil Crane (Yam) was the initial leader in moto one of the 250cc Experts . He stayed up front for the first lap and traded with Kenny Rodriquez (Mai ) for the second lap. Joey Schlag (KTM) , Bryan Wargo (Yam) and Pete Langley (Mai) were hot after them and soon became the three leading bikes . Schlag crashed trying to defend his position from an insistent Wargo who took the first place honors. Langley was across for second and Schlag was third. In the second moto , Scott Rice (Yam) stretched a head start through the rubber band into the holeshot and early front spot. The lead very soon was commanded by Wargo who had been behind Rice , Jim Olson (Hon) and Brad Emery (Yam) at the start. Wargo was the comfortable frontrunner with the dicing all behind him between Olson , Langley and Emery . Langley, a newcomer to 250s , appeared totall y at ease in the situa tion and pulled into a clear second place by the fourth lap. Emery defended third from Olson and Rice was in fourth battling for every corner with T ed Cabral (Suz). W ith two laps to go Wargo push ed int o the pits with a seized engine . Langley com pleted the rem a i n i n g circuits bou yed by the j ubilant chee rs of his ecstatic father . Em ery retained second, Olson third . Ross Liberty (Mai) edge out Jerry Cabral (Suz) into th e turn at the start of the first moto of the Open Juniors and Pa t La ne (C·A) was third to start. John Haaker (Hus) was last , but moved by the others and int o the lead on the second lap. Liberty was not discou raged and was back into first place for the checkered flag . The second moto was a dead heat down the starting chute, but at the tum it was again Liberty who had the first wheel up the hill with Cabral and Dave Carlson (Mai) next. Liberty reo ta ined his lead to the finish and Haaker made it two for two after chasing Cabral for many laps before getting by. Johnny Smith (Suz) holeshot the first moto of the Open Novices and then dropped back to finish sixth, but he won the second moto coming from a third place start. Ron McClinton (Mai) came from behind in mota one to finish first , but was fifth in mota two. The consistent second pla ce rides of John Brymner (Yam) earned him first overall. Brymner waged an interesting side-by-side duel with Alex Chellew (Yam). Chellew was a close third each time out which added up to second overall . David Woodall's Maico was first around th e turn and up the hill in both Open Exp ert rnotos , but Jerome He iberger's Can-Am came across the finish line in first place each time. Mike Miller (Suz) was next in line in moto one with Brad Emery (Yam) pressing him from behind. He iberger was closing in on Emery by th e third lap , but before he got there Emery had moved in front of Woodall to lead for several laps before He iberger took over for good. Jim Fisk (Mai) was third . In the second mota Emery again followed Heiberger across the finish line , but this time Lance Burgess (Suz) was third. Marshall Martinez (Suz), a local Livermore lad, was first around and up the hill to start both motos of the l25cc Novices. In the first moro, Tom Dalzier (Kaw ) got into the lead almost immediately and was first across the finish line . Mike McCarty (Han) took over the lead in the second mota and held on to it to the finish. First Glen Beckercite (Han) and then Brian Summers (Yam) traveled in second place, but in both motos Martinez reestablished himself there for the finish . Joey Schlag (KTM) grabbed the holeshot in both 125cc Expert motos, led for a while and crashed back to finish second behind Mike Beier (Yam) who put together a double victory sweep. Phil Crane (Yam) and Bryan Wargo were hot contenders for part of the WESTERN OFFICE / 4925 Mercury Street, San O iego. CA 92111 Phone 714/565-1414 EASTE RN OF FICE I2400 Marilyn Park Lane, Columbus.
