-Canada- Nonhern California-Nonhern Billy Scott triples at Salinas ST By Bill Spencer o SALINAS, CA, JUNE 8 00 Round ing out a full wee k of District-style short track racing at the Salinas Airport q uartermile, Billy Sco tt took a powerful hold on a top Black Plate spot with a double class win and made it a triple header by winni ng the King of the Hole money race on his S & S R acing Yamahas . The long week m ay have contri buted toward a low rider turnout , but t he racing was at a premium level. The Mini whizzers ace Expert W inkie Freitas took a do uble win to ro und out the weeken d , Fi rst , he did a go od jo b on t he 100cc Yamaha over Kurt Cha ndler's Kawasa ki of Sal inas mount and then fin ished in front of Chris Ca rr and C ha ndler in the 80cc class. Bot h Carr and Chandl er weren't too happy wit h themselves as they both thought they had a chance at the win and the big point payoff. Brya n Taber won his first -ever firstplace trophy in the Pee Wees on a neat little R M50 while Bod ie Shepard continued to dominate the 80cc Junior beating out Eric Mayfield , Charlie Vorse took the smallish 125cc Novice/Junior class win while Shawn Black out-horsepowered the field of 250cc Novices and Juniors over Vance Sherfield. Bill Scott was long gone when they finally got the 250cc Experts to go in the right direction what with false starts and lack of a good starter, Bru ce Johnson held the crowd at bay wh ich became a six -man freight train until Johnson's scoot seized in the m iddle of th e back turn causin g lots of excitement a nd a bunch of banging. Frank Garcia had been foll owing closel y with Dave Rosa, Doug Chandler and Keith Day right behind when the stuff hit the fan . By the time it got stra ight down the front , Rosa took the point, sti ll some 10 bikes behind the fas t fleei ng Scott with Cha ndler doing the chasing alo ng with Danny Moore. Scott continued on h is merry way for the big win on his ND -sparked S & S Yamaha whil e Rosa held seco nd over Chandler on the Dan's Plumbing, Harry Lilli e-tuned YZ. Chandl er kept the very q u ick Sal inas Kawasak i quacker ahead of Moore a nd th e Champion Yamaha of Salinas special. Steve Nunes b rou ght ou t th e Hills Ferry Ra cer for the O pe n Novice/ Ju nior win with flying Dou g O'B rien in for second on a "sporty forty." T he othe r big class belonged to the 500cc Experts a nd once again , after th e usual delays of trying to get th e race started, it was Bill Scott ou t-horse powe ring th e pac k into th e tight fir st tu rn . There was a good battle between Chandler and Rosa for second with Chandler th e winne r . W ith virtually no pla ce to pass, Rosa was an easy third .
