I tend to look at motorcycling rather philosophically, that the act of riding pu ts control of you r life literall y in you r own h an ds. People today tend to li ve at the mercy of forces beyond thei r own control - like our government, for example. Riding a motorcycle, at least tempora rily, offers a viable alternative to leading a n othe rw ise munda ne existence. Yes, I don't like the government to tell me everything what to do .. . How do you feel about my feeling that advertising controls too much of our lives? In terms of mot orcycling, it never influenced my decisio n to ride. Oh! You honestly tell me . that the Motorcycle Industry Council has people after them to ban motorcycles? There have been people that strong about it? I do not know for a n absolute fa ct, but there are a pparently people out there who are ben t on doing just th at. To outlaw them? I am not trying to outlaw them. Perhaps this (the book) would help to ma ke something like that happen . .. 1 don't think it ever will, because this is still a free country. But I am not for it (motorcycles). I just simply want them to be awa re of the dangers! The crazy ones tell me it's not any more da ngerous than a car. I be li eve , as do ma ny others , that a motorcycle is respo nsible transportation in the hands of respo nsi ble peo ple. I would tend to not agree with you on that. Why? Because it is not responsible transportation . It might be in the hands of 'a responsible person, but even that per· son is out there tak ing a chance - a greater chance than in a car or airplane. Three times as great as in a carl I noticed in your book as I read it that it doesn't have the same type of documenta r y style that I h ave found comparable to th e investigative reporting of people like R a lph Nader. If anything, it's unde r-dramatized. I feel that if the young people will not read a dull textbook, I did not want to write a dull textbook.
