(Left) Andre Vromans, leading Jim Gibson and Lackey here, was the top European finisher in third. He rode consistently, if not spectacularly, to 4-6 finishes. (Rightl Brian Myerscough hooked it for the Support class overall, finishing behind Warren Reid in the first moto and winning the second after Reid's shock went away. 12 Fox Yamaha and Alan Smith on a Husky . . Ward went around Myerscough for second the next time around and the leading trio began to put a little ground on the rest of the pack . Coming up through t ha t pack was Mike Brown on a Moto-X Fox Yamaha and Glover who was on the move . It took Glover until mid-mote to find a way past Brown, but by then the leaders were too far ahead. Reid continued to lead up to the checkered flag with no problem. Ward's pace seemed to slow, though , allowing Myerscough to catch and pass him by lap nine . Glover was the fourth rider in , and Maico-mounted Steve Rh yan pipped Brown on the last lap for fifth . A starting gate malfunction ca used the second moto to be restarted and on the second try, Reid once again went immediately to the front followed by Ward , Myerscough and Carlos Serrano on a Moto-X Fox Honda. Myerscough charged to wrest the lead from Reid on lap two as the Kawa saki rider began experiencing shock problems. Unable to keep the pace as his shock faded away, Reid dropped back, giving up third on the last lap to Glover who again had to cut through the pack. Myerscough took the win with his 2I tally , Reid got second and Ward third. Rounding out the top 10 in moto two were John Day on a Yamaha , Brown, Peter Wanket on a Moto -X Fox Yamaha, Smith, Suzuki's Ron Turner and Kawasaki's Chappy Blose who rode a tremendous catch-up ride after going down in the first tum and getting away near last. 125cc Women's National The race Saturday for the 125cc Women's Expert crown did not begin well for defending Women's Motocross Champion Dede Cates whose Suzuki seized an engine in the morning's practice session. However, her father pulled the barrel, sanded down the piston and put things back together with a prayer. Cates promptly went out and hole shot the first moto with Team Dynamic/ Yamaha rider Lisa Akin, Suzukimounted Kimi Douglas and E.C . Birt Honda pilot Kathy Holman in close quarters behind. The first two laps found Akin, in her second race here, pressing Cates hard until she bailed and dropped back to fourth . Undaunted , she was up quickly as Cates motored on to an unchallenged win and began chasing the front trio. It took a lap to get around Holman who later fell and finished II th o Akin then set her sights on Douglas who appeared to be secure in ~_o.?~_s.?~e..~~: tance ahead of her. However, Akin didn't give up and charged steadily forward , chopping away the distance in small chunks. It paid off as Akin put Douglas away in the final comer before the checkered flag . Following them in were Mercedes Gonzalez. Joyce Hoffman Lancer, Marcy Lewis and Jan Murray. Moto two started with Akin and Cates scrapping at the fore again . Gonzalez keeping an eye on the action in third. Douglas had tangled with another rider on the first jump and went down hard , sending her to the hospital with a broken arm. In the meantime. Cates found an opening in the far section of the course and slipped past Akin to lead that first lap. Already they were beginning to pull away from Gonzalez, Holman. Murray and Kelly Kline. Cates set a hot pace and slowly moved away from Akin. It seemed as though the champ would again be unchallenged. Akin would not let her get away so easy. however, and drew close to Cates after the midway point in the moto, As Cates said later, "It surprised me how she hung in there." Cates proved to be more adept at moving throught traffic and squelched Akin's bid to upset her. Cates received the checkers happily first, Akin runnerup and Holman third . Trailing them in were Gonzalez, Murray, Kline and desert racer Trudy Beck. . Adding some flair to the trophy presentation was none other than Roger DeCoster who gave the top six riders their trophies and congratulations be fore heading out to the track himself for practice. • Results 5OO
