TMA riders go for it at Wolfcreek By Charlie Wiese WOLFCREEK , TX ,JUNE8 Wolfcreek was the sight of the most recent Texas Motocross Association (TMA) points-paying event that ended with Mark Rakestraw (Hon), Mel Newman (Yam) and Monte Anderson (Yam) taking home the big bucks as well as the winner's share of the valuable TMA points in Pro racing action. Racing was just like the track conditions, excellent all da y long with the morning program proving very exciting. In Mini Junior action, the points race continued with "Racin " jason Upshaw (Yam) taking both action-filled rounds with heavy pressure coming from David Barnhill (Yam) all morning long. " Big" Shannon Burns (Hon) broke int o the top four with a 5-4 effon as "T hundering" Peter Thornfield (Suz) came back for third with a fine comefrom -behind ride in round two racing action. 125cc Novice Division 1 was full of surprises with " Bad" Bubba Neal (Yam) taking top honors in the heavily contested event with a 5-1 effon. Second behind Neal was "T he Rocket" Chris Retra (Hon) who piloted his "red rocket" to consistent 2-5 finishes while first round winner, "Movin'" Mark Terry (Hon) , faded to third after a bad stan in the first -ever restart at Wolfcreek MX that occured in round two. Jack "Sq uirrelly" Wehrle (Yam) ended up fourth with 4-2 finishes as Mike Pierce (Hon) rounded out the "score keepers' nightmare" in fifth with a pair of fives to his credit. A small field of 125cc Pros moved din next with Mark Rakestraw (MugHon) taking th e watercooled bike to consecu tive mo to victories after battling in ea ch action-filled round with Dennis "T he Max" Brand (Yam ). In round one, Rakestraw wired the holeshot with Brand in roost. As the moto progressed Rakestraw and Brand left the field behind as they diced it out for the lead . By mote's end , Rakestraw had accumulated a nice lead with Brand holding on in second as Mike Cupito (Kaw) finished third . Round two was much the same with Rakestraw proving untouchable as Brand settled for second with "Dazzlin'" Danny Doss (Hon) moving up to third after battling with Tony " Nitro" Neilsen (Yam) who finished a close fourth in the moto and the overall column. 250cc Intermediate action had some of the tightest racing of the day as Kyle Hughes (Hon) and "Gassin' Glen " Goodier (Hon) went at it in bo th rounds of racing action. Round on e had Goodier pacing himself int o secon and later slipping by Hughes for the win in a fam iliar fashion. In round two, however, "Come Back " Kyle held off th e track-wise Goodier for the moto win and the overall after battling all afternoon long. Hughes took home the gold with Goodier in second, Scott Davis (Yam) , who lead early each action-filled event , in th ird and "Gasin' Glen's" brother Gene in founh. Mel Newman (Yam) took home th e big bu cks in 250cc Pro ac tion. Newman put toge ther a pair of fine ri des on the "yel1ow bird" with a wire -to wire win in round one followed by Nick "T he Stick" Cordova (Yam ), " Magic" Monte Anderson (Yam) and Kirk "The Kid" Spencer (Yam) . Round two had "T he Stick" grabbing the holeshot only to become the victim of a derailed chain which allowed Newman to proceed with his winning ways. Newman managed to hold on for the win with " Magic" Monte in second, "T he Kid" in third, Jimmy Neal (Yam) in founh and "T he Stick" ending up ftfth . In the Open Pro event, the weekly battle between " Magic" Monte and "T he Kid" continued as they left the field while dueling for the lead. Spencer led in round one until Anderson slipped by in the middle of lap six. Anderson continued to lead as he and Spencer battled , until Anderson did a "Texas Turf Test" that allowed Spencer to regain the lead and take the first round victory. Anderson came back for second and Chris "T he Bullit" Hipp (Yam ) took third . In round two , Spencer and Anderson moved by early leader James Knight (Yam) and the battle began. Handlebar to handlebar th ey went until lap eight on the scheduled 10-lap event when Anderson moved by for the duration. Anderson won the super battle and the war with Spencer second, Hipp third , Knight founh and Steve Mulholland (Yam) fifth overall.e Results M ICRO M INI: 1. Chris Anderoon !Yam); 2.
